QUILCENE — Quilcene needed three big plays to get past Clallam Bay 18-0 and outlast the rainy weather.
“It was pouring down rain,” Quilcene coach Nic Dahl said.
“Take the worst you’ve seen in Neah Bay . . . and double that.”
J.J. Smith opened the scoring for the Rangers with an 80-yard fumble return.
“Turnovers killed us,” Clallam Bay coach Cal Ritter said of Saturday’s game.
“The weather didn’t help, but it was just as bad for both teams.”
Quarterback Jacob Pleines gave Quilcene a 12-0 lead with a 68-yard scramble to the end zone.
Pleines then hooked up with Josh King for a 35-yard touchdown pass to make it 18-0. Pleines dropped the snap, picked it up and off his back foot heaved the ball toward the end zone.
Pleines completed six of 12 passes for 110 yards and ran seven times for 91 yards.
Smith caught five passes for 75 yards. He also led the Rangers with 17 tackles to go along with his fumble recovery.
King had 11 tackles, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble, and Pleines had 10 tackles and a forced fumble.
Nate Weller contributed 10 tackles.
The Clallam Bay offense was able to drive the ball down the field, but couldn’t put the ball in the end zone. They had multiple turnovers in the end zone.
“I’m not taking anything away from them, they were a good team, but that was definitely a game I think we should have won,” Ritter said.
The Bruins (1-3) open Northwest Football League North Division play at home against Crescent (0-4) on Friday night.
Next up for Quilcene (2-1) is a road game with South Division opponent Rainier Christian (1-3).
Port Townsend 52, Bellevue Christian 39
KIRKLAND — The Redskins survived a bit of a scare from the Vikings at Lake Washington High School.
“It was a barn-burner,” Port Townsend coach Nick Snyder said of Saturday night’s game.
“I thought we’d play better defense. But it was a great ball game, a lot of fun.”
The Redskins offense, though, ran for 654 yards, averaging 12.8 yards per carry.
Jacob King and Tim Russell picked up many of those yards, with King running for 290 yards on 26 carries and Russell had 268 yards on 16 carries.
King already has 685 yards rushing in four games this season, which surpasses his 2012 total of 636 yards in nine games.
Port Townsend scored 24 points the fourth quarter as they finally pulled past the Vikings (1-1, 2-2).
The Redskins (1-1, 3-1) play at Vashon Island (1-3) on Friday night. The Pirates are coming off a 41-20 loss to Eatonville.
Rainier Christian 50, Crescent 22
JOYCE — In the battle of no-win-teams, of the Mustangs used their spread-option attack to move into the win column.
The young Loggers, meanwhile, fall to 0-4 on the season.
“Well, another tough game, what is there to say?” Crescent coach Darrell Yount said.
“We’re learning and again, position by position, we’re seeing progress.”
Zach Fletcher returned a kickoff 74 yards for a score, Quin’Tinn March sprinted in from the 9-yard line and eighth-grader K.C. Spencer hauled in a 15-yard toss from Quenton Wolfer for the Loggers’ three scores.
“Was good to see our veteran March and our newcomer Spencer get their first touchdowns of their careers,” Yount said.
“That’s always exciting for the kids.”
Fletcher picked up 80 yards rushing on 14 carries, and March ran three times for 54 yards.
Spencer had 80 yards receiving on three catches.
Wyatt McNeese and Wolfer led Crescent with 11 tackles apiece.
Rainier Christian’s 50-point outburst was led by quarterback Jared Nelson, who scored all seven of the Mustangs’ touchdowns.
Crescent was again without speedy running back Travis Walker and lineman Dane Kjerulf.
“We again felt the absence of Walker and Kjerulf, who didn’t get medical clearance to play,” Yount said.
“We’re hopeful to have a full roster as we travel to Clallam Bay this Friday. We will certainly need it, as they are a very talented team.”
Cedar Park Christian 46, Chimacum 0
BOTHELL — The Cowboys fell to 0-3 on the season as Cedar Park Christian earned its second consecutive shutout.
Connor Johnson scored three touchdowns for the Eagles (3-1), running in from 19, 8 and 10 yards out.
Next up for Chimacum is homecoming against Life Christian on Friday night at Memorial Field.
