PREP FOOTBALL: Port Townsend dominates first go-round with Charles Wright; Chimacum loses to Vashon

PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend took round one, but round two is the one that batters.

The Redhawks trounced Charles Wright Academy 49-6 at Memorial Field on Friday night.

The two teams meet again — same time, same place — with a state playoff berth on the line.

Behind Wesley Wheeler and David Sua, Port Townsend ran all over the Tarriers, building up a 35-0 halftime lead.

They added two scores in the second half, a long throw by backup quarterback Berkley Hill to Detrius Kelsall and an interception return by Jeff Seton.

Seton, the starting quarterback, also had a touchdown pass to Isaiah Mason.

The Redhawks did lose starting guard and leading tackler Keegan Khile, likely for the season, with a leg injury.

“That was a heartbreaker; last night, I couldn’t sleep,” Port Townsend coach Nick Snyder said.

“It’s depressing. You never want injury, especially guys who put so much into the program. Nobody works harder than him in the offseason.”

Friday’s game was the sixth time in nine games this season that the Redhawks have held their opponent under 10 points. They have allowed only 94 total points.

“The defense is solid,” Snyder said.

“In a 10-game season, if you can hold them under 100 points, that’s dang good.”

Even though another game with Charles Wright looms, Snyder wasn’t necessarily trying to hide anything in Friday’s win.

“We ran our normal stuff,” he said. “We didn’t show everything, only opened up half of playbook

“This offense gives people lots to prepare for. We gave them a lot to go over, but there’s still a lot left.”

Vashon 54, Chimacum 20

VASHON — The Cowboys made too many mistakes and couldn’t overcome penalties that took away two scores to fall on the road to the Pirates.

“We had two touchdowns called back because of penalties that we never got anything out of, we dropped two other passes that were open-field TDs if we don’t trip on the way to the end zone, but we were unable to secure the ball,” Chimacum coach Mike Dowling said.

The Cowboys also had two dropped passes on fake punt attempts that would have kept drives alive in what was a tough game overall.

Injuries continue to hamper Chimacum (0-6, 0-9), which was down to 13 healthy players by the end of the game.

If the Cowboys have enough healthy players available, they will face Vashon again Thursday night at Memorial Field.

Game time is likely 6 p.m. due to the Vashon ferry schedule.

“Our game is this Thursday night and then Friday we will all be in Port Townsend to support them [the Redhawks] for their last game at home Friday night in their push to the playoffs,” Dowling said.

“If it’s not us, then we hope it’s them. They deserve everything they have coming and are a hell of a football team.”
