PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend’s stout defense produced its second shutout in less than a week with a 44-0 nonleague stomping of Bellevue Christian at Memorial Field.
The Redhawks (2-0) blistered Port Angeles 49-0 in the season opener last Friday.
In the first two games of the young football season, Port Townsend has outscored its opponents 93-0.
Thursday’s blowout wasn’t much different than last week’s.
“The linebackers, most of them are seniors, except for [sophomore] Detrius Kelsall, but David Sua and Keegan Khile are doing a great job and Ezra Easley is playing well behind them,” Port Townsend coach Nick Snyder said
“Detrius is running well on the back side, and our secondary, [Jacob] Ralls and Carson Marx, are playing well in coverage.”
Kelsall returned from a bruised collarbone that sidelined him during the second half of the Port Angeles game.
Snyder said the Vikings hit on two long pass plays in the early going, but the Redhawks adjusted defensively and came up with fourth-down stops to stall the drives.
Port Townsend led 7-0 after one quarter and 28-0 at halftime.
“Sua had a phenomenal game for us offensively, running and throwing the ball,” Snyder said.
“[Wesley] Wheeler got untracked for us in the second half and ran well, and Detrius and Kyle Blankenship all contributed.”
Ralls also scored on a long punt return.
“I thought they [the Vikings] were a pretty talented team coming in, so I though the effort was impressive,” Snyder said.
“We came out of the locker room at half with more intensity than last week.
“We had another big lead, and these Thursday games can be tough because of the short week, but we were pretty focused.”
The Redhawks pay a visit to Klahowya to open Olympic League 1A Division play next Friday.
