PREP FOOTBALL: Port Angeles powers past Kingston 40-7

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles powered past Kingston in all three facets of the game with the Roughrider offense running and throwing for scores, the defense forcing turnovers and getting stops and a solid effort on special teams in a 40-7 romp over the Buccaneers.

“Last week was a disappointment [in a loss to Bremerton], but we came back, worked hard at practice and we just played physical, and it got us the win,” junior running back and defensive end Jaziel Livingston said. “I feel like we got them at the beginning. They didn’t expect us to run as hard as we did.”

Livingston got the ball rolling for Port Angeles, busting loose for a 55-yard touchdown run up the left sideline on the Riders’ first possession and setting up a 4-yard Daniel Cable touchdown run with a 27-yard rumble into the red zone. Livingston injured his left hamstring on the play, but still finished the game with a team-high 114 yards on eight carries.

“Livingston is a warrior,” Riders coach Brent Wasche said. “Between him and Jacob Felton, you better bring the hurt because it’s going to take a little bit of work to take them down.”

Felton added 12 carries for 88 yards on offense, was in the Buccaneers’ backfield all day on defense, and continually pinned Kingston’s offense deep with high, booming kickoffs.

He also added some style points late in the game by blasting a 35-yard field goal.

“Jacob Felton, for sure, he had some good hard runs and good kicks,” Livingston said when asked which senior stood out in the senior night contest.

Up 18-0 after a 32-yard TD run by Cable, the Riders’ defense stood tall with a fourth-and-1 stop deep in Port Angeles territory by Kameron Meadows and Joe Ritchie to end a Kingston drive that consumed 6:11 of the second quarter.

“That was a statement play,” Wasche said. “They really came out prepared to make that stop and put it to them. When you only allow seven points defensively you have to be happy with that.”

The Riders essentially put the game out of reach on the ensuing possession, driving 88 yards in 1:19 thanks to three long pass plays.

Freshman quarterback Parker Nickerson found Dru Clark for gains of 28 and 26, then hit Cyras Mills on a 24-yard TD pass to go up 24-0 at halftime.

“We were able to spread the ball around a little tonight, which was great,” Wasche said. “We have a lot of kids with the potential to make plays. Dru Clark had a huge reception, Cyrus Mills caught a touchdown pass.”

Port Angeles also received production from senior defensive end Robbie Fors and interceptions by Brantyn Fisler and Clark.

“Robbie Fors has been a staple on our defensive line all year,” Wasche said. “He’s been a hugely pleasant surprise. He’s been our defensive lineman of the week twice.

“And Dru Clark coming in and having that huge reception and the interception. You would never believe that this is his first year playing high school football.”

The Riders (2-1) will wrap their season with a road game Thursday at Shelton. The game will be livestreamed on YouTube by MasonWebTV.
