PREP FOOTBALL PICKS: Sequim facing tough task against speedy River Ridge

Second straight state tournament bid on line for Wolves

BREMERTON — Sequim has a challenge on its hands when the Wolves (8-1) host River Ridge (4-5) in a winner-to-state, loser-out district football game tonight at 7 p.m. at Bremerton High School.

The Hawks’ win-loss record is deceptive, according to Wolves head coach Erik Wiker.

“A good team that is definitely better than their record,” Wiker said. “They play in the toughest division down there [the South Puget Sound League’s Mountain Division] with Steilacoom.

“Their level of competition has been high all season, and they’ve played some really good teams close. They are a group that could have easily been the second seed in that division.”

River Ridge has a speedy weapon in dual-threat quarterback Jevon Brown. Brown is 6-foot-1, 175-pounds and possesses a 4.6 40-yard dash time.

In stats through eight games, Brown is averaging 8 yards per carry, with 941 rushing yards on 117 carries, including 13 touchdowns.

He’s also completed 59 of 126 passes for 784 yards, five TDs and 13 interceptions.

“He looks fast [on film],” Wiker said. “He got to the edge on run plays pretty quickly.”

The team’s possess one common opponent on their schedules. Sequim beat Washington 42-14 in week one while River Ridge beat Washington 50-29 in week seven.

The Wolves will be without defensive back/wide receiver Michael Young due to injury.

The Pick: Sequim.

Sultan at Port Townsend, 6:30 p.m.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Redhawks (4-4) wrap their season with a senior night contest against the Turks (1-8).

Whether Port Townsend is basking in the afterglow of its last-gasp, final play touchdown to beat rival Chimacum 24-22 last week is the biggest question entering this game.

The Pick: Port Townsend

Thursday game

Chimacum (2-7) visited Concrete (2-7) late Thursday.

The Pick: Chimacum

Last Week: 5-2

Season-to-date: 50-10.
