SEQUIM — A young Sequim football squad kept league powerhouse North Kitsap in check for a quarter, but the Vikings overpowered the host Wolves over the final three quarters for a 49-7 Olympic League win Friday night.
Colton Bower, last season’s league MVP, led an efficient Vikings offense with 229 passing yards and three touchdowns — two to Logan Sloman — and ran for two more scores.
The No. 1-ranked Vikings are now 5-0 on the season and are atop the league standings at 3-0, out-scoring opponents 159-7 in their past three contests.
Sequim (1-4) scored its lone touchdown in the first quarter, a Lars Wiker 63-yard pass to Brandon Wagner that cut the Vikings’ lead to 14-7.
“We got better today,” Sequim head coach Erik Wiker said. “I’m proud of some of the veterans who played hard. They came out in the second half and made adjustments.”
The Vikings scored on six of nine possessions — two ended in halves, and other by punt — and added a score on a fumble. North Kitsap faced just four third-down situations and converted two-thirds (10 of 15) of its second downs.
Wiker said he was impressed with the leadership of Kobe Applegate, a former starting quarterback who shifted to wide receiver this season, Applegate had three catches for 39 yards and shared kick return responsibilities.
“He’s embraced that (role) … and made us a lot better,” Wiker said of Applegate.
Lars Wiker finished 10-of-22 for 150 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
Sam Fitzgerald led the Wolves with 88 yards on 11 carries, and Aiden Gockerell added 34 rushing yards.
Bower was 14-of-21 for 229 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.
Sequim’s roster was depleted Friday with eligibility issues, with about a dozen players in reserve on the sidelines.
Wiker said overall program numbers should improve by next year with a full offseason — including spring practices and summer camp.
Sequim hosts North Mason on Oct. 15, the Wolves’ final home game of the year.
