WESTPORT — Neah Bay stepped up in class to put a hurting on Ocosta 60-0.
The 8-man Red Devils, ranked second in Class 1B, dominated an 11-man game against the Class 2B Wildcats.
“Our defense really stepped up,” Red Devils coach Tony McCaulley said following Friday’s game.
“I don’t have stats in front of me, but they [Ocosta] might have had only one first down in the first half.”
Running back Cole Svec threw a 42-yard halfback pass to John Reamer just before halftime to make the score 30-0.
Reamer also opened the scoring with a 26-yard touchdown catch from sophomore quarterback Cameron Buzzell, who was making his first start under center.
“Cameron played pretty good, made good handoffs, showed some good ball skills,” McCaulley said.
Reamer later made it 10-0 with a safety with under a minute to play in the first quarter.
Reamer also recorded a safety, sacking the Ocosta quarterback in the end zone.
Svec scored on a 54-yard run to make it 22-0 and then hooked up with Reamer with three seconds to play in the half to extend the lead to 30-0.
In the second half, Svec returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown, Michael McGee scooped up a fumble and took it 25 yards to the end zone and Chris Martinez had a 38-yard touchdown run.
Isaiah Knaus concluded the scoring by picking up a Neah Bay fumble and taking it in from 1 yard out.
McCaulley praised linebacker Josh Monette for his performance on defense.
“Josh played outstanding tonight, had a lot of tackles for us,” McCaulley said.
“Everybody played and our second group really played well in the second half.”
The Red Devils host top-ranked Lummi on Friday.
Lummi traveled to Adrian, Ore., where it lost 44-20 to Adrian.

FORKS — The Spartans had a difficult time with one of the powerhouses of British Columbia high school football.
“It was a big learning time and provided a good chance for all our young kids to play,” Forks coach Mark Feasel said.
“I told the kids we can play a game and learn from it, or have practice and not learn as much, and I think the kids feel pretty good with how it went.”
Mount Douglas put up three quick scores in the first quarter and made all three 2-point conversion tries for a 24-0 lead after the first quarter.
The Rams led 31-0 at halftime and added three more scores in the second half.
“They really killed us on the inside zone read,” Feasel said.
“They were getting to the edges and going.”
Forks was able to put together a long drive into Rams’ territory that cheweed up some clock in the second quarter.
“They loaded the box to stop us in the first quarter, they knew that was our strength,” Feasel said.
“So we had to go double twins [formation] and spread them out and that really helped so they couldn’t stunt all the time.”
The drive sputtered though, after a targeting penalty on Mount Douglas didn’t provide the automatic first down the Spartans were counting on.
“That was a headscratcher,” Feasel said.
“There’s some new rules this year, we just have to get a better handle on them as coaches.”
Feasel liked the play of senior quarterback Javier Contreras and wide receivers Austin Whiting and Kenny Gale.
“Javier had a really good game, when he gets out in space he can do some damage and he completed some nice passes today,” Feasel said.
“Austin caught a few passes for us and Kenny Gale had a couple of nice runs and some good catches.”
Feasel liked seeing production from players other than Contreras or senior running backs Dimitri Sampson and Miguel Morales.
“Those three senior boys are the meat and potatoes for us, but it was nice to see those other kids that can be factors,” Feasel said.
