LUMMI — Neah Bay’s big football rivalry with Lummi turned out to be another shocker for the Red Devils.
In a good way. And Neah Bay might be a new No. 1 come next week.
Neah Bay, ranked No. 2 among 1B schools, swamped the Blackhawks 70-6 on their field Friday night.
“They practise so well day in and day out,” said coach Kane Bachelor.
Bachelor said that in a similar blowout win (58-20) over Naselle last week, the Red Devils played well for a half, but “kind of faded down the stretch.” Against Lummi, Neah Bay put together a complete game.
“They’re really clicking right now,” Bachelor said.
Bachelor said quarterback Julian Carrick had four or five touchdowns on offense, and added a pair of interceptions on defense. In fact, the Red Devils had a total of five interceptions.
Bachelor also said Carrick had the play of the game near the end of the first half. He said he was simply running out the clock with Neah Bay up 30-6 and down at their own 6-yard line and called for a simple quarterback sneak.
Instead of running out the clock, Carrick scampered for 94 yards for a touchdown.
Then, as soon as Lummi got the ball back, Neil Bowechop got a quick interception and returned it to the house as the Red Devils scored 16 points in a matter of seconds.
“I was happy going into the half up 30-6. Julian and Neil turned it into 46-6,” Bachelor said.
Makyah Chambers added two more interceptions. “I was teasing him that he hasn’t gotten any interceptions this season. He put me in my place,” Bachelor said.
Bachelor said that despite the lopsided score, the Blackhawks played physical. “They actually did a good job wrapping up Jodell Wimberly,” he said. The Red Devils’ running back got a fair amount of yardage but was not able to break off any 50- or 70-yard runs like he did against Naselle.
Neah Bay (3-0) has a bye next week and next plays Crescent at Joyce at 1 p.m. Oct. 1.
