PREP FOOTBALL: Loggers’ Leonard goes for 221 yards; Velarde scores 4 TDs for Sequim

CLALLAM BAY — Noah Leonard had another huge game, with 221 yards rushing and three touchdowns and the Loggers rolled to a 68-27 win over Clallam Bay in a torrential downpour.

Despite all the scoring, there was little passing in Friday evening deluge for the two teams’ second 6-man game this season.

Leonard, who already has over 1,000 yards rushing two-thirds of the way through the season, had TD runs of 1, 51 and 34 yards. Crescent also got 96 yards rushing from K.C. Spencer, including a 53-yard and 31-yard touchdown.

For Clallam Bay, the Bruins got two touchdowns from Ryan McCoy and from Ryan Strid, McCoy also had a touchdown pass (to Strid), while Strid threw a touchdown pass (to McCoy).

Crescent won the pair of home-and-home contests with Clallam Bay.

The Loggers (0-1, 3-3) next play at Lummi at 6 p.m. Friday. Clallam Bay (1-2) is scheduled to play at home at 1 p.m. Saturday against Tulalip Heritage for its final scheduled game of the year.

Sequim 38, North Mason 19

BELFAIR — Sequim’s Gavin Velarde broke out with his biggest game of the year with four touchdowns as the Wolves won their first Olympic League 2A game of the season 38-19 over North Mason.

Velarde had a monster game Friday with 148 yards receiving and touchdown receptions of 28 28 and 65 yards, a 44-yard interception return for a touchdown, 36 yards rushing and a tackle that caused a fumble on a punt return. Velarde even scored a two-pointer and threw a pass for another two-point conversion.

Quarterback Riley Cowan also had a big game, throwing for 204 yards on 10 for 24 passing with the three TDs to Velarde. He also rushed one yard for a touchdown.

Velarde had come into the North Mason game with just a pair of TDs as teams were keying on him after his spectacular 2016 season.

“Gavin played well, Reiley threw the ball well, special teams played well,” said coach Erik Wiker.

Wiker said the Wolves’ defense had a good game. He singled out Austin Henning at defensive end, Taid Wiker at middle linebacker and Ben Newell at outside linebacker as having solid games.

The win was critical for the Wolves (1-2, 3-3) as they entered the game 0-2 in the Olympic League 2A Division. Now, they are right back in the playoff mix with a huge game against Olympic (1-2 in league) at home at 7 p.m. Friday. With a win, the Wolves could jump right back to a tie for third place in the Olympic League 2A Division.

“This win sets up Olympic as a big game,” said Wiker.

Renton 38, Port Angeles 7

RENTON — Playing against a team from the powerful South Puget Sound League, Port Angeles struggled with the Renton Indians’ speed in a 38-7 loss.

The bad news for the Roughriders is that starting quarterback Chris Guttormsen went out early in Friday’s game with a twisted ankle and was not able to return. On Saturday, coach Brett Curtis didn’t know yet the severity of the injury.

Nate Drake came in and filled in, completing two passes for the Riders for 55 yards. One of those was a 54-yard touchdown to Garrett Edwards. Curtis said Edwards got some good blocking on that play but that it was also an outstanding individual effort on Edwards’ part.

“They [Renton] had good speed. They ran the ball pretty well. Our defense showed in some spots, but they chewed up the field. Their blitz hurt us. They did a lot of blitzing,” Curtis said. “They were one of the fastest teams we’ve played.”

Other highlights were an interception by Isaiah Getchell and a fumble recovery by Edwards.

“He [Edwards] had a good game. Individually made big plays on both sides of the ball,” said Curtis.

Anton Kathol had 41 yards rushing on two carries and Jarrett Burns had 30 yards rushing on 22 carries for the Riders.

The game doesn’t hurt the Riders’ standing in the Olympic League 2A Division. The Riders still sit in third place (2-1, 3-3) with a homecoming game at home 7 p.m. Friday against Bremerton, which is 2-1 in Olympic League 2A play (5-1 overall).

Forks 32, Tenino 12

TENINO — Forks bounced back from its Montesano loss by evening its Evergreen 1A League record at 1-1 with a 32-12 win over Tenino.

The Spartans (1-1, 5-1) next play at home Friday in a nonleague game against 2A North Mason.
