PREP FOOTBALL: Loggers felled by Lummi in wild shootout 54-52

JOYCE — Crescent entered its Northwest Football League contest with Lummi knowing it needed to contain Blackhawks’ playmaker Caleb Revey if the Loggers hoped to triumph in Saturday’s homecoming game.

The plan worked for a half, but Revey and Lummi got untracked offensively in a big way after halftime to squeak past Crescent 54-52 in a thrilling eight-man contest.

Revey scored five of his seven touchdowns after halftime, piling up 170 receiving yards on seven catches, rushing 17 times for 100 more yards, completing a crucial fourth-down pass and throwing for the eventual game-winning two-point conversion to lift the Blackhawks.

“We went over it all week, we knew what they were going to come at us with, we watched film of all their games this year, Crescent head coach Brian Shimko said. “The kids knew the plays but we are young, only two seniors and all the rest freshman and sophomores. We were down a starter without big Darren [Lee].”

Revey’s biggest damage came on explosive plays in the pass game. He caught a 42-yard TD pass from Jordan Jackson over the middle on the opening drive of the second half and a 58-yarder up the right sideline later in the third period as the two team’s traded scores.

Those are areas the Loggers can learn from going forward.

“It’s stuff like in coverage — don’t play the quarterback, play the receiver,” Shimko said. “If we would have just played the man instead of the quarterback it would have been a totally different game. We go over that and coach that up every game, but those guys doing the covering are freshmen and sophomores, they’ll get there.”

Revey’s play was matched by an excellent rushing game by Crescent senior quarterback Eric Emery. Emery ran for 297 yards on 23 carries as the Loggers showed they can learn from their opponents.

“Eric had a great game,” Shimko said. “We threw probably 15 new plays in there today because we knew they would have film on us. That included the one where Eric was breaking it out and we were pulling the guard up the middle, that’s the same play that Naselle ran on us [last week].

Another difference in the contest was in two-point conversion attempts.

The Loggers scored more touchdowns than the Blackhawks (eight to seven), but converted on just two 2-point attempts, while Lummi went 6 of 7 on two-point tries.

Shimko came away believing in his team.

”I think it shows that us, Lummi and Neah Bay are all right there and pretty equal,” Shimko said. “I’m excited to see what having Eric for a full game will do for us against Neah Bay.”

The Loggers (3-4, 1-1) visit the Red Devils (5-1, 2-1) at 7 p.m. Friday.
