OAK HARBOR — Neah Bay was without two of the main components of its run game in its 1B Tri-District playoff game against Lopez Island.
So, the top-ranked Red Devils went to the air.
It more than worked, as quarterback Josiah Greene threw six touchdown passes and Neah Bay beat the Lobos 86-30 at Oak Harbor High School.
The win clinched a state berth for the Red Devils, who are seeking their third straight 1B championship game appearance, and more importantly, their second state championship over that span.
Neah Bay (9-0) is off this week, which will give running backs Cody Cummins and Tyler McCaulley an extra week to heal for the state run.
The Red Devils will open the state playoffs against the winner of this week’s game between Liberty Christian, the team that beat Neah Bay in the state title game last year, and Cusick, the 2012
1B semifinalists.
All six of Greene’s touchdown passes in Friday’s game came in a first half when the Red Devils built up a 58-18 lead.
He completed 12 of 21 passes for 219 yards.
Ezekiel Greene and John Reamer were Greene’s two top targets.
Ezekiel Greene caught five passes for 58 yards and two scores.
Reamer hauled in four passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns, including a 70-yarder near the end of the first half.
Cole Svec (two catches, 29 yards) and Elisha Winck (one catch, 11 yards) were on the receiving end of Josiah Greene’s other scoring strikes.
Despite their successful air attack, the Red Devils didn’t abandon their run game.
Colin Haupt ran 14 times for 169 yards and three second-half touchdowns, and Josiah Greene finished with 142 yards rushing and a touchdown on eight carries.
Ezekiel Greene scored a 29-yard touchdown on his only carry of the game, and Svec ran for 27 yards.
As a team, Neah Bay ran for 376 yards and had 595 yards of total offense.
For the season, Josiah Greene has passed for 1,281 yards and 21 touchdowns (only two interceptions), and run for 1,113 yards and 15 touchdowns.
He has also scored three defensive touchdowns. That includes a 48-yard interception return for a score near the end of Friday’s game against Lopez.
Tyus McGee and Cameron Buzzell led the Red Devils with 10 tackles.
Bobby Long, Josh Monette and Buzzell each recovered a fumble, and Svec and Reamer both record sacks.
Lopez (6-3) will have a chance to play its way to state against Wishkah Valley (7-2) this week.
Clallam Bay 68, Rainier Christian 14
KENT — The Bruins ended their trying season on a high note by thrashing the Mustangs in a 1B Northwest Football League crossover game at Kentlake High School.
“It was probably the funnest game I’ve ever coached,” Clallam Bay coach Cal Ritter said after Saturday’s game. “The way we played is just amazing.
“The five seniors all played collectively their best game together. I told them before the game, this game’s about memories . . . and you guys dictate it.”
Senior running backs Matt Mohr and Calvin Ritter combined for 392 yards rushing for the Bruins.
Senior defensive linemen Joe Maneval and Evan Messinger smothered the Rainier Christian run and pass games.
The other senior, Travis James-Hunter, had the first touchdown run and the first interception of his career.
“One of our goals in the game was to get him a touchdown,” Cal Ritter said.
James-Hunter was inserted at quarterback, where he ran behind the blocking of Mohr and Calvin Ritter for an 8-yard score.
Mohr was especially exceptional in the last game of his high school career.
He rushed for 261 yards and three touchdowns, caught three passes for 84 yards and a touchdown and, as time ran out in the fourth quarter, he returned an interception 102 yards for a fifth touchdown.
“That was the icing on the cake,” Cal Ritter said.
Mohr finishes the season with 1,510 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns, and that despite playing on the offensive line for a few games.
Calvin Ritter, who has excelled at running back since being forced to the position due to injuries last year, had 14 carries for 131 yards and two touchdowns.
Ritter, who also was moved to offensive line for part of the season, had 1,013 yards rushing with 13 touchdowns.
Messinger opened the scoring with a 11-yard touchdown pass from Kelly Gregory.
Clallam Bay finishes the season with a 3-7 record.
Although the Bruins are losing major pieces on both sides of the ball, Saturday night’s game also showcased the talent they will have back next year.
Casey Randall returned a punt for a touchdown and quarterback Kelly Gregory had his best passing game of the season, completing 8 of 12 passes for 113 yards and touchdowns.
