FORKS — Forks upset defending 1A state champion Montesano 14-12 to earn its first win in a long time against the defending 1A state champions.
The Spartans had lost nine consecutive games to the Bulldogs, dating back to 2003.
Forks never trailed on Friday, scoring on its opening drive to take an early 7-0 lead.
Montesano answered with a touchdown in the second quarter, but the extra-point try was blocked and the Spartans held a 7-6 lead.
They added to that lead with 9:09 to play in the third quarter when quarterback Javier Contreras hooked up with Andrew Armas for a 70-yard touchdown pass. After the extra point, Forks led 14-6.
The Bulldogs drove down the field and scored a touchdown with 2:25 left.
Last week, the Spartans lost to Tenino when they were unable to punch in a two-point conversion in overtime.
On Friday, they stopped Montesano’s two-point conversion that would have tied the game.
Instead, Forks led 14-12, and held on from there.
With six minutes left, Montesano missed a 37-yard field goal attempt that was tipped by Forks.
The Bulldogs were driving in the final minutes of the game, but a pass on fourth-and-7 fell incomplete, giving the Spartans the ball with 1:19 left.
Forks (1-1, 2-3) will look for its third win of the season against Rainier (0-3, 1-4) on the road. The Mountaineers lost to Tenino 56-7 on Friday night.
Klahowya 18, Port Angeles 14
SILVERDALE — The Roughriders led 14-6 going into the fourth quarter, but their upset hopes crumbled on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Eagles quarterback Konnor Langholff to James Charoenmak on a fourth-and-7 play.
Port Angeles built their lead on first-half touchdown runs by Matt Robbins and quarterback Nate Angevine.
The Riders had two 100-yard rushers in the game, with Miki Andrus picking up 124 yards on 18 carriers and Robbins gaining 103 on 19 carries.
With the loss, Port Angles falls to 0-5 on the season and 0-3 in the Olympic League.
The Riders will try for their first win since the end of the 2011 season against Bremerton on Friday at Civic Field. The Knights (1-2, 2-3) were blown out by North Kitsap 51-0 on Friday.
Quilcene 58, Rainier Christian 22
KENT — The Rangers improved to 4-1 on the season by dominating the Mustangs at Kentlake High School.
Quaterback Jacob Pleines ran 206 yards and four scores. He also for passed for a touchdown.
Colton Pol carried 10 times for 76 yards, Josh King ran for 76 yards on 12 carries, and J.J. Smith carried five times for 42 yards.
Also carrying the ball for Quilcene were Evan Hunt (three for 7 yards) and Dillon Bettinger (one for 14).
Defensively, the Rangers were able to contain Rainier Christian quarterback Jared Nelson.
Last week, Nelson scored seven touchdowns against Crescent.
He gained 220 yards on Friday, but only scored two touchdowns against Quilcene.
“He’s Josiah Green-good, the way I look at it, the way he sets up blockers and glides down the field,” Quilcene coach Nic Dahl said.
The Rangers kept Nelson running side-to-side rather than down the field.
King led Quilcene with eight tackles. Pol had seven, including a sack, fumble and fumble recovery on the same play.
Pleines added an interception.
Quilcene hosts Muckleshoot (1-2) on Saturday.
