FORKS — The Spartans football squad got back on the winning track, bouncing back from a loss against Montesano last week with a 45-13 league win on the road against Tenino, their first win in the exceptionally tough Evergreen 1A League this season.
Hayden Queen scored three touchdowns for the Spartans, while Logan Olson also scored a touchdown on a punt return.
“Tenino has some big kids and good players,” said coach Trevor Highfield. “Our quarterback [Carter Windle] did a great job on both sides of the ball.”
Windle also plays defensive end for the Spartans.
Highfield also said tailback Tony Hernandez-Flores played well, as did Hayden Baker and Dalton Kilmer.
The Spartans are a very young team full of freshmen and sophomores, yet they are 4-2 on the season.
“I’m excited about our growth. We’re growing every week,” Highfield said.
Forks (1-1, 4-2) has a nonleague game Friday at a good 2A team in Olympic (3-1, 4-2).
Quilcene 58, Evergreen Lutheran 34
TACOMA — The Quilcene Rangers went on the road to play an undefeated Evergreen Lutheran team for supremacy in the Sea-Tac 1B League and came away with a 58-34 win, remaining at the top of the league.
The Rangers got 180 yards rushing and three touchdowns from Bishop Budnek. Isaac Dugdale added 86 yards rushing and two TDs and Chase Newman had 74 yards rushing as the Rangers tallied nearly 400 yards rushing.
Holdem Elkins had 30 yards rushing and 145 yards passing on 7 for 11 passing. He completed passes to five different receivers.
“We played really well in the first half,” said head coach Trey Beathard. “In the second half, we got a little bit sloppy.”
Quilcene could have won by an even bigger margin but lost two fumbles on first-and-goal plays, one at the 1-yard-line.
“I liked how we played on both sides of the ball until the fourth quarter,” Beathard said.
On defense, Kevin Alejo and Cash Thacker led the Rangers with 12 tackles each. Thacker also caused a fumble and had a fumble recovery. Zach Budnek had 10 tackles and 1½ sacks while Kristian Mack and 3½ sacks.
Quilcene (2-0, 4-1) is scheduled to play at Seattle Lutheran (0-2, 0-3) at 1 p.m. Saturday, but Seattle Lutheran has had to cancel some of its games due to lack of players.

Naselle 56, Crescent 14
JOYCE — Naselle continued to show that it is the 1B team to beat west of the Cascades.
The Comets beat Crescent 56-14 on Saturday. There’s no shame in that score. Naselle (6-0) is averaging over 60 points a game and has an average margin of victory of 46 points. The Comets beat Neah Bay 50-14 earlier this year.
Despite the score, the Loggers did have plenty of offense, racking up more than 240 yards rushing and another 85 passing. Brayden Emery ran 14 times for 141 yards, while Wyatt Lee gained 49 yards on 12 carries.
Eric Emery was 6 for 13 passing with Brayden Emery leading the team with 39 receiving yards.
Brayden Emery scored both of Crescent’s touchdowns, one on a 7-yard run and the other on a 30-yard run on a hook and ladder play from Eric Emery and Brenton Dalton. He also scored a 2-point conversion.
Coach Brian Shimko said the Loggers were struggling with five kids sick with the flu. He said the Loggers were able to march up and down the field, but had problems with bad snaps down near the goal line.
“We could move the ball down the field. We had a couple of chances to push it in,” Shimko said.
Shimko said Naselle has a good front line and two amazing athletes — Fa’aoso Tutu’u at running back and Ethan Lindstrom at wide receiver. Tutu’u is one of the fastest 1B sprinters in the state.
The Loggers (1-1, 3-3) host Lummi (1-1, 4-1). That game is schedule at 2 p.m. Saturday in Joyce.

Cascade Christian 71, Chimacum 0
PUYALLUP — Unbeaten Cascade Christian showed the Chimacum Cowboys that it is one of the better 1A teams in the state with a 71-0 win at home Saturday.
“They were out to put up numbers on us,” said coach Chris Storm. “We were focused on not getting anyone hurt.”
Cascade Christian’s quarterback is committed to playing football at Yale, Storm said.
Chimacum protected some of its starters for upcoming games and tried new players in new positions. One of those players was Cade Martin, who started at quarterback.
“He did well. When he needed to, he tucked the ball and ran. He completed some passes,” Storm said.
Storm also said Nathan Nisbet and Tanner Haddenham also played well for the Cowboys and that Anson Jones always plays well.
Chimacum (1-1, 1-4) will next play at Bellevue Christian (2-1, 3-3) at 5 p.m. Saturday.
