PREP FOOTBALL: East Jefferson’s defense steps up for win on Homecoming

Rivals hold Vashon to 76 yards on offense

PORT TOWNSEND — East Jefferson’s defense stiffened in the second half, sacking Vashon a half dozen times and Aaron Glanz’s 47-yard interception return late in the fourth quarter sealed the Rivals’ 20-7 win Friday at Memorial Field.

“We were up 14-7 going into the last 3 minutes, 3-down-and-15 and Aaron read it perfectly, picked it right in front of receiver and took it home,” head coach Tony Haddenham said.

The Rivals held the Pirates to just 76 yards on offense.

“It was a defensive battle, really and our defense came up really big, I think we had six sacks — from Gary Zambor, from Aaron, from Siaumau [Asuseuga] and two or three from Gerald Lindsey,” head coach Tony Haddenham said.

“We also blocked a punt in the third quarter that put us on the [Vashon] 4-yard line and Trevor Wilson ran it in from there.” Glanz converted the two-point conversion to put East Jefferson in the lead at 14-7.

Glanz also threw a 5-yard touchdown pass out of the team’s heavy formation to usual quarterback Cash Holmes in the first half.

“Cash ran a slant route and it wasn’t there, so he peeled off and went to the corner and Aaron tossed it to him from about 5 yards,” Haddenham said.

Wilson’s 56-yard interception return set up the touchdown by Holmes.

The Rivals (2-1, 2-4) have a bye next week.

“This is pretty well-timed,” Haddenham said of the break. “We have kids that are beaten up and bruised up, so this gives us some time to rest and recover.”
