KINGSTON — Defense dominated for Sequim in a down-to-the-wire 13-10 Olympic League 2A victory over the Buccaneers.
Friday’s win kept Sequim (1-0, 3-0) undefeated on the season.
The Wolves’ defense stepped up during the Buccaneers’ final drive downfield in the waning moments of the game.
First, Sequim caused a 5-yard loss to push Kingston back to the Sequim 40-yard line.
Then, on the final play of the game, the Buccaneers’ last-chance heave was intercepted in the end zone by Kane Stoddard to preserve the win for the Wolves.
“They had to earn every last point,” Sequim coach Erik Wiker said of Kingston.
“We had a lot of kids step up and play out of position tonight, but our defense has an attitude and made big plays.”
Noah Christiansen made two huge plays for the Wolves.
He caught a 34-yard pass from Riley Cowan in the first quarter to give the Wolves a first-and-goal situation.
Cowan then found Christiansen for a 6-yard TD pass.
Later, Christiansen intercepted a Kingston pass in the second quarter, returning the ball 40 yards to the Buccaneers’ 1-yard line.
Brandon Stamper scored on the next play and Sequim led 13-3 at halftime.
The Wolves gave up a 1-yard TD run by Ali Chiquiti in the third quarter.
“Kingston found a little groove and moved the ball better in the second half, but our defense responded and got stops,” assistant coach Dave Ditlefsen said.
Arnold Black produced 83 yards on 19 carries for Sequim.
The Wolves (1-0, 3-0) will host North Kitsap (1-2) next Friday.

Quilcene 50, Clallam Bay 30
CLALLAM BAY — The Rangers pulled away from the Bruins with a big third quarter.
Quilcene led 14-12 at halftime before putting up 22 points to Clallam Bay’s six in the third.
“We had a horrible third quarter,” Bruins coach Cal Ritter said.
Clallam Bay was plagued by fumbles Friday, putting the ball on the ground six times and losing three.
“Turnovers killed us,” Ritter said.
“If we could have put a good game together, it was definitely a winnable game.”
Playing without freshman standout Clayton Willis, the Bruins had to mix and match their offense.
This meant more carries for Sam Signor and a breakout game by senior Kyle Keys.
Signor carried 14 times for 84 yards and a touchdown. Keys gained 283 yards on 22 carries. He scored touchdowns on runs of 47, 68 and 65 yards, all in the second half.
“The second half was the Kyle Keys show,” Ritter said. “He ran the ball well in the second half. He ran with a purpose.
“He was workhorse this week. He definitely stepped up and filled the hole [left by Willis], which was nice to see.”
Clallam Bay’s other score was a 10-yard touchdown pass by Alan Greene to Martin Cummings as time expired in the second quarter.
It was the only pass completed by the Bruins, and only one of three they attempted.
“They had a big, fast line,” Ritter said of the Rangers. “We had trouble holding the line a couple times.
“Quilcene hits hard, they’re coached real well.
“It was a tough ball game but definitely winnable.”
Cummings led the Clallam Bay defense with 15 tackles. Greene and Signor had 12 and freshman Ryan McCoy finished with 10.
The game was called early when the lights went out with less than three minutes remaining in the game.
“We had the ball,” Ritter said. “I don’t know if it would have made a difference.
“We have an issue with lights that need to be fixed.”
Clallam Bay (1-2) hosts Muckleshoot this Friday.
The Kings had to end their game against Crescent last week due to a lack of players, but the Bruins also are low on healthy players so Ritter expects Muckleshoot will make the trip.
Quilcene (2-0) will play at Crescent on Saturday.

Coupeville 28, Chimacum 26
PORT TOWNSEND — The Cowboys are getting close, but that doesn’t make this loss any easier to swallow.
Chimacum (0-3) has lost 15 straight games and for the second straight week came close to snapping that streak.
The lost to Forks by five points last week, and had opportunities in the final minute against the Wolves on Friday at Memorial Field.
“It’s been tough the past couple weeks,” Cowboys coach Mike Dowling said.
“We’re working hard, but we’re not getting paid yet.”
Chimacum scored with less than a minute to play but missed the two-point conversion that would have tied the game.
The Cowboys then recovered the onside kick, but Quinn Dowling’s pass was intercepted by Coupeville’s Hunter Smith with 32 seconds left in the game.
Chimacum led 13-12 at halftime and scored on its first possession of the second half to take a 20-12 lead.
But the Wolves adjusted and scored 16 straight points to take a 28-20 lead.
Mike Dowling said penalties and other mistakes by the Cowboys aided Coupeville’s comeback.
“At some point, we’ve got to finish,” Dowling said.
Dowling is pleased with the play of the Cowboys’ lines.
“Right now, I’d say our offensive and defensive lines are doing a great job,” he said.
“They’re the ones keeping us there.”
Injuries have piled up on the O-line, which has forced Trevon Noel to move from running back to guard.
“He’s such an unselfish guy, he does what the team needs him to do,” Dowling said.
“Really, he should be in the backfield.”
Chimacum plays at Klahowya (1-2) this Friday.
Neah Bay 50, Taholah 0
TAHOLAH — The Red Devils crushed the short-handed Chitwins in a rain-drenched nonleague contest.
Neah Bay coach Tony McCaulley said his underclassmen were able to see a good deal of action Friday after he pulled most of his starters in the first quarter with the Red Devils leading 22-0.
“Our young guys got to play a lot, which is good for our young kids but not so good for our starters,” McCaulley said.
The Red Devils forced a punt on Taholah’s opening possession, and Cameron Buzzell took the kick 55 yards for a touchdown.
The Chitwins then fumbled, and Cole Svec took a pitch and scored untouched from midfield.
Neah Bay’s final varsity touchdown of the game was scored on a pass play from Rweha Munyagi Jr. to Buzzell.
“Taholah’s quarterback got hurt, and they were already real short on numbers, so it got out of hand pretty fast and I put in the backups after that,” McCaulley said.
The Red Devils will face Lyle-Wishram at home on Friday.
Neah Bay went on the road to defeat the Cougars 58-6 last season.
“They were a young team last year, so I think they’ll give us a better showing this time,” McCaulley said.
Montesano 62, Forks 0
MONTESANO — The Bulldogs used a balance runs and the passes to subdue and shut out the Spartans in Evergreen League action.
Montesano’s offense racked up 473 yards, 325 on the ground, in Friday’s win.
Forks, meanwhile, couldn’t muster much offensively through the air or on the ground.
Cole Baysinger was 8 of 17 for 68 yards passing. Kenny Gale led the Spartans’ ground game with nine carries for 44 yards.
Jack Dahlgren led the Forks defense with six tackles and a sack. Reece Moody added three tackles and a sack.
The Spartans (0-1, 1-2) host Rochester (0-1, 1-2) on Friday.
