JOYCE — The Crescent Loggers football sequad was burned by a bad second quarter against South Bend.
Head coach Brian Shimko made sure it didn’t carry over to the second half.
And boy, did the Loggers heed his words.
Crescent outscored South Bend 32-0 in that second half en route to a 56-28 win Friday, the Loggers’ first win of the year.
“I was a little upset,” Shimko said. He said defensive breakdowns allowed the Indians to score three quick touchdowns in a four-minute span in the second quarter, putting the Loggers down 28-24 at the half.
“Three major malfunctions let them score three times in four minutes. I told them ‘they do not score in the second half or we’re running all day Monday’,” Shimko said.
“It was all about getting back to assignments and players knowing their responsibilities,” Shimko said. “It was a totally different team in the second half.”
Wearing a knee brace, Eric Emery returned just two weeks after a dislocated knee to play an outstanding game at quarterback. He threw for 206 yards and three touchdowns while also running for 60 yards on 12 carries.
Shimko said they eased Emery back in, not letting him play defense until the second half. Emery’s presence in the defensive backfield was also a factor in the Loggers slamming the door on the Indians that second half, Shimko said.
Wyatt Lee was the workhorse for the Loggers, rushing 26 times for 183 yards, three touchdowns and four extra points.
Brayden Emery caught six passes for 98 yards and had seven rushes for 62 yards. Brenton Dalton ran three times for 88 yards and Jayden Tejano had two catches for 88 yards.
Crescent (1-2) next plays at Darrington (2-0) at 6 p.m. Friday.

La Conner 30, Chimacum 12
LA CONNER — The Chimacum Cowboys changed around a number of their players to try some new things in a nonleague game and it resulted in a pair of touchdown passes.
Henry Brebberman took over at quarterback and threw a pair of TDs to Bjorn Danaan-Devas and Cade Martin.
“We played pretty well. We’re pretty banged up and wanted to try some different things. We’re a young team just trying to find our place,” said head coach Chris Storm.
Storm said sophomore Clayton Smith, who had started the Cowboys’ first two games, is a scrambler who can throw short, but that Brebberman brought some different skills to the position.
“I think we caught them off guard a bit,” he said.
Storm thought the game was a lot more evenly matched than the final score showed.
Chimacum is now done with its pre-league schedule. The Cowboys (0-3) begin league play at home at 6:30 p.m. Friday against Klahowya (0-3) in an Olympic League 1A Division opener. It’s likely the last league game between Klahowya and Chimacum as the two programs are expected to change classifications next year.
