JOYCE — Casey Randall and Kyle Keys combined for 279 yards rushing as Clallam Bay opened the season with a dominating 48-0 road win over Crescent.
Randall rushed 11 times for 149 yards and two touchdowns and Keys had eight carries for 130 yards and two scores.
Keys was a factor all over the field throughout Saturday’s game.
He played a few snaps at quarterback and threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to freshman Clayton Willis, and he picked up a fumble and ran 53 yards for a touchdown near the beginning of the second half.
That touchdown gave the Bruins a 20-0 lead. Crescent coach Darrell Yount called it he “backbreaking score.”
“Clallam Bay is a very scrappy team who will cause a lot of teams some problems,” Yount said.
“They were simply crisper than we were. [Clallam Bay] coach [Cal] Ritter did a good job having them prepared. Our hats are off to he and his crew.”
Randall also had a nice game on defense, leading the Bruins with 16 tackles to go along with one sack.
Martin Cummings recovered a fumble and picked off a pass for Clallam Bay and Sam Signor kept pressure on Crescent quarterback Neil Peppard all game long.
“Our defense was all over their quarterback,” Clallam Bay coach Cal Ritter said. “Every time that he would throw, we were there.
“I commend Neil Peppard for hanging in there; he played a good game under a lot of pressure.”
Another highlight for Clallam Bay coach Cal Ritter was the playing time of Caiton Smith, an eighth-grade who Ritter estimates stands 4-foot-10 and weighs 85 pounds.
Smith caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Kelly Gregory late in the fourth quarter and made the initial hit on a defensive play to help preserve Clallam Bay’s shutout.
“Seeing stuff like that, that’s what the game’s all about,” Ritter said.
“The kid’s got heart and you can’t teach that so I’ll take that any day.”
Neil Peppard led the Loggers in passing and rushing with 130 yards and 56 yards, respectively.
Defensively for Crescent, Zach Fletcher had 18 tackles and Cody Wolfer had 10. Freshman KC Spencer had an interception.
“We’ve a ways to go,” Yount said. “Defensively we felt good about our effort and execution most of the way.
“But when our offense sputtered, we left too many short fields for the Bruins and they were able to capitalize.
“Contain-wise, we were there most every play, but Casey Randall gave us fits. Reminded me of some of our speedy backs from past years.”
Both teams return to action Friday.
The Loggers play at Muckleshoot, while Clallam Bay hosts Rainier Christian (0-1).
“We’re looking toward next week against Rainier Christian,” Ritter said.
“We’ve still got a lot to learn, but it was a good opener.
In other North Olympic Peninsula football action Saturday, Quilcene made the long trip to Lopez and lost 64-20.
