CHIMACUM — Nothing about Chimacum’s 33-21 win over Vashon Island went according to plan.
For starters, the game started Friday at Memorial Field in Port Townsend and finished Monday at Chimacum High School.
The Cowboys scored a touchdown and then failed to convert the two-point attempt, and trailed the Pirates 21-20 with 5:21 to play in the game.
Then the Friday night lights went out.
A transformer caught fire and caused a power outage at Memorial Field.
The Nisqually League game was originally set to conclude Saturday afternoon, but that was later changed to Monday afternoon.
When the game resumed, Chimacum kicked off to Vashon.
The Cowboys’ plan was simple: Stop the Pirates, get the ball back and pass their way down the field.
On a third down-and-short play by Vashon, Chimacum’s Alex Morris scooped up a fumble and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown that gave the Cowboys the lead.
“Everything we had planned went out the window,” Chimacum coach Shawn Meacham said.
The Cowboys stopped Vashon again.
“We ran the ball down the field and scored on them again,” Meacham said.
Morris scored on a bootleg run from about four yards out to give Chimacum a 33-21 lead and all be lock down its first victory of the season.
“It was great,” Meacham said.
“It was pretty surreal to win the way we did. Obviously, it didn’t feel like a full game, but we’ll take the win.
“We had a good week of practice; we practiced harder than we have practiced all year.”
The Cowboys (1-6) hope to carry the momentum into Saturday night’s league crossover game against Bellevue Christian (2-6) at Lake Washington High School in Kirkland.
Chimacum lost to the Vikings 28-6 earlier this season at Memorial Field.
The last five minutes against Vashon Island was a rare occasion in which a game was played at Chimacum High School.
Standing on the practice field Tuesday afternoon, Meacham said he isn’t quite sure how rare.
“I was thinking it was the first time [playing here] since the 1970s, but some people were saying the 40s,” Meacham said.
“Some don’t think we have played here since Memorial Field was built.
“So, nobody seems to know.”
