JOYCE — Clallam Bay got itself a football team and Crescent managed to get two wins in one week.
The Loggers beat the Bruins 66-19 in a six-man game, but more importantly, the Bruins will have a football season after it appeared the program would be shut down for lack of players.
“We’re doing everything we can to keep the program alive,” said Bruins coach Cal Ritter. “I’m really proud of hte kids. We’re playing football and that’s what matters.”
Also of note is that Miranda Tyree became the first girl to score points for the Bruins football team. She caught a pass in the end zone from Ryan Strid on a conversion to score two points after touchdown for Clallam Bay.
For the Loggers, they get a league win because Wishkah Valley was forced to forfeit its Saturday scheduled game. So, the Loggers quickly scheduled a six-man game with the Bruins, which they won.
Noah Leonard had three rushes for 130 yards and three TDs for the Loggers. Wyatt Lee gained 68 yards on nine carries, while Brayden Emery gained 64 yards on seven carries. Eric Emery passed for 135 yards on 6 for 9 passing.
On defense, Brayden Emery also recovered five fumbles.
Strid scored three touchdowns for the Bruins while Colin Aldana threw a TD pass.
Clallam Bay and Crescent will play again Friday, this time in Clallam Bay. The Bruins have games scheduled against Quilcene in Clallam Bay on Oct. 15, against Tulalip on Oct. 19 and Neah Bay on Oct. 22.

Quilcene 50, Tacoma Baptist 34
TACOMA — Quilcene avenged a season-ending loss from last year and more importantly for this year, seized the inside track to a Sea-Tac 1B League championship with a 50-34 road win over Tacoma Baptist.
The unbeaten Rangers piled up nearly 500 yards of offense. Quarterback Holdem Elkins was nearly perfect, going 6-for-7 with 182 yards passing and three touchdowns. Olin Reynolds rushed for 160 yards on 11 carries with three rushing touchdowns and another TD receiving.
There’s obviously another few games to play, but Tacoma Baptist was considered probably the toughest team in the league coming in to the year.
“This game felt like the winner would take a big step toward a league championship,” said coach Trey Beathard. “It’s hard to win on the road. It felt good.”
Beathard said he didn’t think revenge was on the players’ minds. Many of them have gotten over last year’s playoff loss to Tacoma Baptist. That was the first and only loss of the year for the Rangers.
“These kids have goals. It’s a fairly big senior class. They want to say they’re back-to-back Sea-Tac champs,” Beathard said. “The kids knew Tacoma Baptist was a big game.”
The Rangers got off to a torrid start, scoring 30 points in the first quarter. The Crusaders scored 14 in the first as well as both teams lit up the scoreboard early. After that, the game settled down and got more defensive.
Beathard said Elkins had an outstanding game.
“He had some really good throws. They kind of dared us to throw it. That’s the best game he’s played. He did really well against good competition,” Beathard said.
Ben Bruner had 10 rushes for 86 yards, while Bishop Budnek ran seven times for 79 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown. Robert Comstock III had three catches for 94 yards and a 33-yard touchdown.
Beathard also thought several defensive players served recognition. Zach Budnek had 22 total tackles, while Comstock had 13 tackles and two fumble recoveries that killed key Crusader drives. Bishop Budnek had 19 tackles and Bruner 15.
Beathard also said three starting offensive linemen were out and that backups Max Redmon, Steward Beck and Clayton Schleich played great on the offensive line.
The Rangers (1-0, 5-0) have another tough game next week, against Rainier Christian (1-0, 2-2) at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Charles Wright 34, Chimacum 28
TACOMA — An injury took the wind out of the sails for Chimacum as the Cowboys were trying to drive for a late touchdown in a 34-28 loss to Charles Wright.
“We were right down at the goal line with the win in our hands,” said coach Chris Storm.
A Charles Wright player was knocked out and an ambulance was brought onto the field. It delayed the Saturday night game for 30 minutes, Storm said. The player turned out to be all right after the game.
Storm also said the Cowboys were dealing with the flu.
“If we’re a healthy team, we’re definitely a better team than they are,” he said. “I think we played pretty well all things considered.”
Cole Dotson threw two touchdown passes over 50 yards to Issac Purser, while Ben Preston had a 7-yard touchdown run and Aaron Serrato had a 5-yard TD rush.
Chimacum (0-1, 1-3) will next play Cascade Christian (1-0, 2-1) at home at 7 p.m. Friday.
