FORKS — The Forks football team got off to a great start against Adna, but the Pirates took advantage of Spartans mistakes in the second half, erupting for 30 straight points in a 43-14 win.
It was the first loss for Forks in the Central 2B League West.
The Spartans went into the half up 14-13, scoring a go-head touchdown right before the end of the half. Adna responded immediately in the second half by taking the opening kickoff back for a touchdown. Then a pair of Forks turnovers — an interception and a fumble, set up the Pirates deep in Spartans territory, giving them another couple of easy touchdowns.
“The bottom line is they outphysicaled us in the third and fourth quarters,” said coach Trevor Highfield. “We had a hard time stopping their running game. We new they were a good team and a physical team.”
Forks got its first touchdown on its opening drive, which quarterback Bubba Hernandez capped off with a 17-yard run.
“We really did a good job on our opening drive,” Highfield said.
Then at the end of the half, the team again drove down the field, scoring just before the break on a 13-yard pass from Hernandez to Noah Foster.
The Spartans (1-1, 2-4) next play another tough Central 2B League West team in Pe Ell-Willapa Valley (1-0, 3-2)on the road at 7 p.m. Friday. Last year, the two teams played a thriller at Spartan Stadium that Forks won 21-18.
On other games Friday, the Clallam Bay Bruins improved to 4-0 by beating Mary M. Knight 51-0. The Bruins, playing six-man football, have yet to allow a point in four wins this season.
