PREP CROSS COUNTRY: Sequim, East Jefferson harriers win first races

SILVERDALE — After nearly a 12-month-long hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, prep sports finally returned Saturday with a limited slate of cross country competitions held at Klahowya High School.

Sequim competed against Olympic, while East Jefferson (Port Townsend and Chimacum) competed against Kingston in a two-mile race, shorter than the usual 5K cross-country format.

Port Angeles also ran against Klahowya, but results were after press deadline and will be in Monday’s sports section.

Local runners won the boys’ and girls’ races for Sequim and East Jefferson.

Sequim’s Riley Pyeatt, who finished sixth at state last year, returned to her strong form, winning the girls’ race with a time of 12 minutes, 20.2 seconds, more than two minutes ahead of the second-place runner. Finishing second was Sequim’s Anastasia Updike (14:40.0), third was Jessica German of Sequim (14:40.5) and fourth was Aidyn Shingleton of Sequim (15:52.9).

For the Sequim boys, freshman Colby Ellefson won his race with a time of 11:12.5, edging out his teammate Eli Gish, who finished second at 11:31.0. Ellefson and Gish dominated the race as they both finished over a minute ahead of the third-place runner.

Sequim’s Henry Hughes finished sixth with a time of 13:15.0, while Theo McMurray was eighth (15:02.1). Aiden Braaten of Sequim was 11th (16:02.7).

East Jefferson’s Max Allworth-Miles won his race with a time of 11:23.3, while teammate Sebastian Mazna finished second with a time of 12:05.8. The pair, the only East Jefferson runners, beat 15 Kingston harriers.

For the girls, East Jefferson’s Camryn Hines won with a time of 14:16.1, nearly 90 seconds better than second place. East Jefferson’s Sylvia Butterfield finished fourth (17:24.1), while Gina Brown finished fifth (18:17.1).
