PREP CROSS COUNTRY: East Jefferson girls will join boys at state

LANGLEY — The East Jefferson girls cross country team will join the boys at the state 1A cross-country meet in Pasco on Saturday.

The boys team ran at Chambers Bay and won the district championship, automatically qualifying for state as a team.

The girls ran in a different race at South Whidbey High School in the District 1-4 girls championship, coming in fifth place as a team.

However, this race combined girls from four different districts. The Rivals girls were the District 3 champion with 31 points to Klahowya’s 35, qualifying for state. East Jefferson gets to send a full girls squad to Pasco.

Traveling to the state meet will be the Rivals’ Aliyah Yearian, Camryn Hines, Lia Poore, Tadu Dollarhide and Sylvia Butterfield, Fiona Fraser and Ava Vaughan-Mifsud. The boys going to state will be Glen Dawson, Soare Johnston, Max Allworth-Miles, Mark Anderson, Indigo Gould, Sebastian Manza and Aidan Nichols.

Coach Alice Fraser said this is the first time since 2005 that the team has sent both full boys and full girls squads to state.

The Port Angeles boys won the 2A West Central District race as a team, and the full team will travel to Pasco to compete.

Roughriders competing at the 2A state meet will be Tim McDonald, Maxwell Baeder, Joshua Gavin, Zach Gavin, Jack Gladfelter, Jason Gladfelter, Kowen Kasten, Langdon Larson and Naaman McGuffey.

Sequim qualified two girls for the 2A state race. District 3 girls champion Riley Pyeatt will compete along with teammate Kaitlyn Bloomenrader.

Sequim’s Colby Ellefson finished in the top 10 at district and will compete in the boys race at state.
