FORKS — The Spartans boys basketball team showed some resiliency in an important overtime win over Raymond on Saturday.
“Lots of crazy things happened in this one,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said. “They hit some 3s and jumped out on us 15-0. We were playing timid.”
But the Spartans, who lost 58-49 to Raymond earlier in the week, buckled down.
“We switched back to our 2-3 zone and sometimes you don’t need to out-think yourself,” Gooding said. “We also knew they liked to use a 1-2-2 zone, which is a little different, but we had prepared for it and faced it and the kids did well against it.”
Ashton Doyle sparked Forks with 10 points off the bench.
Raymond forced overtime on a prayer at the buzzer.
“One of their guys nailed a three-quarter-court shot and you hope that doesn’t break your back,” Gooding said.
“But we climbed back out of it and we hit 6-of-6 on free throws in the overtime when both teams were in the double bonus. Aidan Salazar hit two, Logan Olson two and Riley Pursley hit two.”
Pursley led the Spartans with 19 points, while Olson had 14.
Forks (8-4, 10-8) is scheduled to visit Ocosta (3-8, 6-10) today.
Wrestling Forks wins Ilwaco Beach Brawl
ILWACO — The Forks boys wrestling team picked up a trio of first-place finishes and won the Ilwaco Beach Brawl on Saturday.
Forks won with 146.5 team points, beating out Castle Rock’s 130. A total of 11 teams participated in the tournament.
Winning their weight classes for the Spartans were Walker Rondeau at 132 pounds, Jake Weakley at 152 pounds and Nate Dahlgren at 170. All three wrestlers went 3-0 on the day.
Forks picked up a pair of second-place finishes — Conner Demorest (3-2 on the day) at 126 pounds and Sloan Tumaua (2-1) at 220 pounds.
Finishing third were Jesus Garcia Dominguez at 113 pounds, Walker Wheeler at 145 pounds and Mason Leinan at 182 pounds. Hector Dominguez finished fourth at 220 pounds.
For the girls, Forks’ Natalie Horejsi came in third in her group, going 4-1 on the day, while Alexis Koskela finished sixth.

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles boys wrestling team came in second place in the Olympic 2A League with a pair of wins over Olympic and Kingston this weekend.
“These kids are peaking at the right time going into subregionals next Friday and Saturday,” said coach Rob Gale.

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles boys swim team beat Olympic 109-59 on Thursday, then lost to North Kitsap 101-69 on Friday, ending their regular season with a 4-2 record.
The Roughriders were victorious over the Trojans in six individual events and two relays.
Kicking off first-place finishes for Port Angeles was senior Adam Weller in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1 minutes, 56.62 seconds. Clocking in right behind him was teammate senior Josh Gavin with a time of 1:56.82, a personal record, and finishing off a 1-2-3 sweep was sophomore Quentin Bennett.
Weller also finished top in the field in the 100 breaststroke. Junior Alex Che, freshman Blake Nahory and sophomore Colby Ellefson finished first, second and third respectively in the 200 individual medley. Che nabbed a very impressive personal best in the IM, improving his time from just last week by more than seven seconds.
Minutes later, Che took top honors in the 100 butterfly. Gavin grabbed another first place and personal best in the 100 freestyle, Nahory won the 100 backstroke, clocking in with a time of 1:03.16, a personal record, just out-touching teammate Ellefson, who finished second at 1:03.51. The Riders’ 200 freestyle relay team of Nahory, Weller, Gavin and Che placed first. The same quartet finished off the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay.
“Even though the meet on Friday against the Vikings wasn’t a ‘W’ on the scoreboard, that doesn’t mean the Riders didn’t swim fast,” said coach Sally Cole.
Gavin and Weller each won races, Gavin in the 200 IM and Weller in the 100 freestyle.
Eleven Port Angeles swimmers earned personal records for the season. Freshman Nolan Medgin swam an impressive 100 breaststroke, improving his time from earlier in the week by four seconds. Other personal bests included Ellefson (second) and junior Davis Hueter, both in the 200 freestyle.
Freshman Finn Thompson finished third in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke.
Other personal bests included Max Bader in the 50 freestyle, Marcus Degroote in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle, Quentin Bennett in the 100 backstroke, and Weller and Aidan Butterworth in the 100 breaststroke.
PA will host the Olympic League Divisionals meet at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Shore Aquatic Center.
