PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles basketball boys got off to a sluggish start against North Mason, but erupted in the second quarter to end up routing the Bulldogs 78-33.
The Roughriders outscored North Mason 23-7 in the second quarter and 67-27 in the final three quarters of Friday’s contest.
“I wans’t happy with our intensity to begin with,” said coach Kasey Ulin. “[But] I loved the ball movement and togetherness after the slow start.”
In the end, the Riders racked up some nice statistics. They had 12 different players score, hit 11 3-pointers (with seven different players hitting treys), forced 30 Bulldog turnovers, scored 42 points in the paint and collected 18 assists.
Friday’s game was a make-up game of a contest postponed on December 15 because of the Peninsula-wide power outage.
Kyle Benedict led the Riders with 19 points, while Payton Schmidt had 11 and Liam Clark 8.
The win propelled the Riders into second place in the Olympic League 2A Division. Port Angeles played a very interesting nonleague game Saturday against Lynden Christian after press deadline. Lynden Christian is the defending 1A state champion and is the current No. 1 ranked 1A team in the state in RPI. This is part of Port Angeles’ desire to play a tough nonleague schedule that also includes four games against 3A and 4A schools (the Riders are 3-1 in those games).
The Roughriders (3-1, 7-3) return to league play with a game at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday against Sequim (3-2, 7-4).

Port Townsend 51, Kingston 38
KINGSTON — The Port Townsend boys blew open a close game with a solid third quarter to beat 2A Kingston on the road 51-38.
Noa Montoya led the Redhawks with 21 points, six rebounds and four steals. Jaden Watkins had 13 points and Cole Crawford 10. Kuba Krol had five points and five steals, while Nico Winegar had 12 rebounds.
“We came out with pretty good energy. We only gave up 25 points in three quarters and were up 20 with four minutes to go,” said coach Tom Webster.
“It was a good stepping stone for [league leader] Klahowya” on Jan. 15, Webster said. “A win is a win.”
“Klahowya is a must-win for us,” Webster said. The Eagles have already beaten the Redhawks once in league.
Before the Klahowya game, the Redhawks (1-1, 6-4) will first play at Chimacum (0-2, 0-6) at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Neah Bay 64, Crescent 42
NEAH BAY — The Red Devils saw the return of Cameron Moore and Keith Johnson Jr. in a 64-42 North Olympic League opener win over Crescent.
Johnson scored 19 points in his return, tying for game-high with teammate Sean Bitegeko. Bitegeko also had 12 rebounds, while Meric Soeneke added nine points in Friday’s game.
The Loggers were led by Brendan Bergstrom, who scored 11 and Braden Emery, who scored nine. Mason Owens added eight points.
Neah Bay (1-0, 5-5) will next play at Clallam Bay (0-0, 1-4) at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday. Crescent (0-1, 2-6) will next play a home game against Chief Kitsap at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.
