TACOMA – Sequim struggled to stop Franklin Pierce and their star guard Javon Barbee in the early going and the Wolves’ season came to a close with a 67-48 bi-district boys basketball tournament defeat Thursday.
Barbee, son of longtime Cardinals’ coach John Barbee, is a highly touted prospect in the Class of 2025. He scored 18 of his game-high 26 points in the first half as Franklin Pierce cruised to a 45-16 halftime lead.
“Franklin Pierce is good,” coach Craig Brooks said. “We struggled against their pressure and Barbee is a strong player.”
Sequim finished 11-11 on the season.
“I am proud of the way our guys grew and developed,” Brooks said. “We gave ourselves a chance to make it to state. The program will be better because of the effort these guys put in this year. We had great leadership from our seniors.”

ROCHESTER — A short stretch of poor play was all it took for the Spartans to get swamped by the Pirates in a winner-to-state contest Thursday.
Forks (18-7) has one last shot at a return trip to the state tournament but must beat Toledo today in a loser-out game at 10:30 a.m. W.F. West High School in Chehalis.
The Spartans were in it against Adna, a state hoops power, late in the third quarter.
“We battled tough in the first half and came out playing some great basketball in the third quarter,” coach David Hurn said. “Most of the third quarter it was around a six-point game.”
But an Adna run quickly saw its lead balloon.
“There was 2:30 left in the third quarter and from that point on the wheels fell off. We had just two or three minutes where we made some poor decisions and Adna is too good of a team to have those types of mistakes. They capitalized and went on a 17-1 run.”
