PORT ANGELES — Sequim’s Adrienne Haggerty was named the co-MVP of the Olympic League 2A Division girls basketball league.
Haggerty, who helped lead the Wolves to a playoff berth, was named MVP along with Katie Campana of Olympic High School.
It was Haggerty’s second MVP award this school year. She was also named the Olympic League 2A Division MVP in volleyball.
“Honestly, I’m a little bit on shock,” Haggerty said. “Getting one MVP, let alone two, is pretty crazy. I can’t feel anything but excited.”
Sequim coach Larry Brown believes Haggerty was recognized for her defensive presence.
“For us, Adrienne was a huge defensive presence. She held some of the best players in the league below their season average every time she stepped on the court.”
“It’s cool to see an athlete win an MVP just in one sport. I’m very proud of her. She definitely earned both of those awards,” Brown said.
Haggerty was also among the top three in the Olympic League 2A Division in scoring with 13 points a game. That figure doesn’t show how important her scoring became down the stretch to the Wolves as they were driving to a playoff slot.
One of Haggerty’s highlights was an unusual 20-minute play-in game Sequim had to play in order to qualify for Districts. In that game, again only 20 minutes long, Haggerty had 13 points in a 24-19 come-from-behind win.
“I went off in that game. I was doing whatever it took” to win, she said.
Haggerty also plays softball for Sequim.
Other all-league honorees
Port Angeles’ Nizhoni Wheeler made the all-Olympic girls first team, while her sister Cheyenne Wheeler made the second team.
For the boys, Sequim’s Payton Glasser was named first-team all-Olympic 2A for the boys. Grayson Peet of Port Angeles made the second team.
The Sequim girls also won the sportsmanship award for the Olympic League 2A Division.
Tyler Yost of Olympic and Zac Olmsted of North Kitsap were named the co-MVPs for the boys.
