SEQUIM — The Port Angeles boy basketball team didn’t have the type of game required for future postseason success against their rivals Thursday, though the Roughriders pulled out a 62-49 win over Sequim.
“Sequim deserves a lot of credit, Sequim executed really well, brought a lot of energy throughout the game and they played very hard,” Riders coach Kasey Ulin said.
“We weren’t as sharp and focused as we like to be. Every game is a postseason game for us now, either in terms of positioning for the playoffs or competing for a league championship, so our focus and competitive stamina needs to be better.”
Ulin did have praise for John Vaara who led all scorers with 21 points and sophomore guard Parker Nickerson.
“John did a good job of asserting himself with 21 points on 9 of 12 shooting from the floor and 10 rebounds.
“Parker stepped up and brought great leadership and confidence. He had 15 points, six rebounds and three steals.”
Isaiah Moore had 13 and Cole Smithson and Zach Thompson each scored 10 for the Wolves.
Port Angeles (10-1, 13-4) hosted Sequim (4-8, 5-11) again late Saturday.

Neah Bay 68, Crescent 64
NEAH BAY — Crescent threw a heck of an opening salvo at Neah Bay, going up 21-8 after one quarter, but the Red Devils eventually ran down the Loggers in a 68-64 North Olympic League boys basketball win Friday.
“It was really a tale of two halves,” Crescent coach Chris Ferrier said. “We started very well playing really balanced basketball on both ends of the floor. The second quarter wasn’t great to us but we were hanging in there.
“Third quarter, hats off to Neah Bay, they really took us out of what we were trying to do and they put together a couple good runs.
“Fourth quarter Hayden [Ferrel] hit a couple of big threes to put us back in front but we didn’t execute in the endgame, [we] had a couple of bad turnovers turn into layups, and it got away from us.”
Ferrier said Neah Bay’s deeper bench wore his squad down and affected the Loggers’ legs.
Julian Carrick had another big scoring night for Neah Bay, posting 26 points and grabbing six steals.
The Red Devils celebrated seniors Devon Halttunen and Ben Della.
Brayden Emery led Crescent with 18.
Crescent (3-2, 8-5) is scheduled to host Chief Kitsap on Tuesday.
Neah Bay (5-0, 7-3) played Crosspoint late Saturday.

NEAH BAY — Five Red Devils scored in double figures in a blowout of the Bears with Jaden Halttunen dropping in 17 points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Kaeden Butterfield added 14 points, six rebounds, four steals, two assists and a block for Neah Bay.

Girls Basketball Chief Leschi 66, Forks 52
PUYALLUP — The Spartans fought their way back from a nine-point halftime deficit and regained the lead over the Warriors late, but a Chief Leschi scoring surge sealed the game.

They got hot and came down and threw up a couple of prayers that banked in and they ended up scoring on four straight possessions. They went on a little heater there.”
Forks (7-3, 9-7) previously lost the coin flip with Chief Leschi for the No. 2 seed and the Spartans opened Class 2B Southwest District Tournament play with a game against Winlock late Saturday.

Neah Bay wins twice
NEAH BAY — Neah Bay senior Oceanna Aguirre led the Red Devils in a senior night victory over Crescent and the Red Devils also took down Chief Kitsap 87-12 in consecutive days Thursday and Friday.
Aguirre posted 31 points, six rebounds, seven steals and seven assists in the win over the Loggers.
Allie Greene had 19 to lead the Red Devils and Aguirre added 18 against the Bears.
Neah Bay (5-0, 10-2) will host a league playoff game on Thursday.
