SEQUIM — Sequim clamped down defensively in the final frame, limiting Bainbridge to just one point in a 38-31 Olympic League girls basketball contest Thursday.
The Wolves and Spartans went to the fourth quarter tied at 30-all.
“It was a tough game for the girls, Bainbridge played very well but our girls locked in and played great defense in the fourth quarter,” coach Joclin Julmist said.
Hannah Bates, who led Sequim with 13 points despite a tough night (1-for-10) from the 3-point stripe, had a key steal-and-basket to break the deadlock. Vaara added an old-fashioned three-point play, Jelissa Julmist hit a key lay-up, and Johnson and Bobbi Mixon added steals late to seal the game.
Bates added eight rebounds, two assists and two steals.
After a 20-point first quarter, Sequim struggled to find the basket, shooting just 14 of 55 from the floor for the game (26 percent).
Vaara added 11 points, six boards, three steals and an assist.
Mixon posted eight points, three rebounds and a steal.
“Bobbi played her best game of the season tonight,” Julmist said.
He said the Wolves were hampered by illnesses (Vaara, Johnson) and injuries (Jelissa Julmist/knee, Bates/thumb).
“We’ve got to get healthy,” Joclin Julmist said.

OCEAN SHORES — The Spartans shook off a slow start to trigger the 40-point running clock in the first half against the Hyaks.
“It took us a little bit to get going, we didn’t score until four minutes into the game,” coach David Hurn said.
Forks turned over the Hyaks and got going in transition offensively.
“We created a lot of offense in our halfcourt defense and we played a little man in the second quarter and we were playing the passing lanes pretty well,” Hurn said. “All of a sudden I looked up and it was a 40-point game.”
Keira Johnson scored 22 points to lead the Spartans while Casadie Whorton added 11.
Forks (7-0, 9-3) hosts Onalaska in a nonleague game at 1 p.m. Monday.

PORT ANGELES — The Riders doubled up the Knights at home Thursday.
“Our 1-3-1 zone did a nice job of slowing down Bremerton’s pace and forcing long possessions,” coach Michael Poindexter said.
“Our players handled themselves well in a physical game, and I was impressed by our maturity and ability to play steadily and calmly. “
Paige Mason scored 10 points with eight rebounds and four assists for the Riders, while Piper Williams scored nine with a team-high five steals.
All players scored, all players picked up at least one rebound, seven players had an assist, and six players got at least one steal. It was a nice overall team effort.

Boys Basketball Port Angeles 72, Bremerton 43
BREMERTON — The Roughriders controlled the Knights from the start in Thursday’s road win, holding Bremerton to 28-percent shooting for the game.
“I was proud of our kids with how they came out focused and disciplined from first tip,” coach Kasey Ulin said.
“We were sharp from early on and defensively, we were really, really good.”
Isaiah Shamp was a force inside for Port Angeles, putting up 27 points on 12 of 18 shooting to go along with 12 rebounds.
“Isaiah was a monster,” Ulin said. “He was so poised in the post, his footwork was great.”
Bryant Hoch continued to have a hot hand from outside scoring 12 points, all on first-half 3s.
“He’s playing with so much confidence,” Ulin said. “I gave him the nickname the Microwave because he heats up so quickly [like former Detroit Pistons role player Vinnie “The Microwave” Johnson], but the kids didn’t know Vinnie Johnson. So they called him the Air Fryer.”
Parker Nickerson added 16 points, five steals and five assists and Dallas Dunning was active with four points, six rebounds, four steals and three blocks.
Port Angeles (7-1, 9-4) will play Sammamish at 3 p.m. Monday in a Martin Luther King Jr. Showcase at Renton High School.
