“Give North Kitsap credit, they came out and got on us early and often,” Port Angeles coach Kasey Ulin said.

“I was not too happy about our mental focus during the first quarter. We did not communicate well, especially in the first half, which led to a bunch of easy points for North.”

Bryant Frith led the Riders with 10 points, Noah McGoff added nine and Janson Pederson had eight.

Port Angeles (2-7, 5-12) hosts Sequim on Friday.

“We have Sequim coming into our gym, which will be the biggest game of the season,” Ulin said.

“It was a real physical game,” Chimacum coach Jim Eldridge said of Wednesday’s contest.

“Our guard Victor Hitt took a big gash across the bridge of his nose.

“Coupeville are just a physical team. If they [referees] called every little thing on them, the game would still be going on.”

The Cowboys pushed past through the strength of their inside game.

Orion Weller had 16 points and Brendon Naylor added 12. John Carthum hit for 15, many off inside drives.

The Cowboys led by as much as 22 before letting the Wolves back in the ballgame.

“It never really got scary close, but we let down a bit,” Eldridge said.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Redhawks picked up their first win on the season by holding off the Eagles late in a back-and-forth contest.

Port Townsend led 30-25 entering the fourth, but Klahowya crept back in the game in the fourth quarter.

“We were playing great defense, and when the shot clock was close to expiring they [Klahowya] would throw up a shot and somehow it would go in,” Redhawks coach Jeanne King said.

“They even banked a 3-point basket.”

King said that Port Townsend was lifted by the play of freshman point guard Kaitlyn Meek.

Meek scored 20 points, her second-straight 20-point game, and had nine rebounds and two steals.

“We responded well to those made baskets,” King said.

“Kaitlyn would drive, hit a bucket and get fouled, and she was key down the stretch.

Sheldon Frances O’Neal hit 1 of 2 free throws with five seconds left to put the Redhawks up one. O’Neal, the team’s lone senior had seven points, 11 rebounds and two steals.

“We called timeout, set the defense up in a full-court man and Klahowya stepped out of bounds in the backcourt,” King said.

“The girls were so excited.

“It was my birthday and all I asked them for before the game was a win.”

Kassie Olin added 12 points, eight boards and three steals for Port Townsend.

The Redhawks (1-4, 1-14) host Chimacum (1-4, 2-13) on Friday.

The two teams play twice in the final two weeks of the season with a third-place birth to districts likely on the line.

“We can do it [make districts], we just need to get a few more wins,” King said.
