SEQUIM — The Sequim boys basketball team doubled up on a traveling team from Australia, winning 80-39, while the Sequim girls lost a tight 54-52 game to an Australian girls team.
Solomon Sheppard had a big game for the Wolves, hitting a pair of 3-pointers and finishing with 24 points against the Bellarine Storm, which hails from outside of Melbourne, Australia. Mason Rapelje hit three 3-pointers and scored 13, while Jericho Julmist scored 13 and Charlie Grider 12. The Wolves blew the game wide open with a 23-4 second quarter, then cruised in the second half.
The deep Wolves’ bench contributed, as well, as nine Sequim players scored. The victory improved Sequim’s record to 7-0.
In the girls’ game against Bellarine Select, also from the Bellarine Peninsula outside of Melbourne, the game was close throughout, with neither team able to build up a big lead.
The Wolves were led by Gracie Chartraw, who made three 3-pointers and scored 23 points to go with six assists, three steals and two blocked shots.
“The girls worked hard tonight but came up short in the end,” said coach Joclin Julmist.
Taylor Heyting had her best game of the year with nine points and 15 rebounds, including five offensive rebounds.
“Manuela [Valle] started tonight and had a solid game with six points and three assists,” Julmist said. All of her points came on a pair of 3-pointers. Hailey Wagner also pulled down nine rebounds to go with four points.
The Sequim boys (4-0, 7-0) play another nonleague game, looking to keep their record perfect, hosting Fife (1-4, 3-6) at 5 p.m. Friday. The girls (1-2, 2-4) travel to Port Townsend on Thursday to play East Jefferson (0-1, 1-6) at 3:30 p.m.
