PREP BASKETBALL: Sequim bounces back against Bucs

PA, EJ, Forks and Neah Bay girls all extend winning streaks

SEQUIM — The Sequim boys basketball team bounced back from its first loss of the year last week with a resounding 68-40 win over Kingston on Friday.

The Wolves completely dominated the second half, outscoring Kingston 42-13 over the final 16 minutes.

Leading the way for the Wolves was Jericho Julmist, who hit three 3-pointers and scored 25. Ethan Melnick also hit three 3-pointers and scored 15, while Jamison Gray had a solid game with 10 points.

Sequim (7-1, 11-1) next hosts North Mason (4-4, 7-6) at 7 p.m. today.

North Mason 68, Port Angeles 67, OT

BELFAIR — Port Angeles’ tough season continued with another heartbreaking loss, this time 68-67 in overtime to North Mason.

North Mason hit a pair of free throws with no time on the clock to win the game.

Port Angeles’ Gus Halberg hit a pair of free throws with 9.2 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 60-60. The Riders’ Keatyn Hoch scored seven straight points to open the overtime, including a clutch baseline 3-pointer with 2:42 left. The Riders held a 67-66 lead with 1:18 left in overtime.

The Bulldogs had one more chance with a potential game-winning shot right at the buzzer. The North Mason shooter missed, but was knocked down and a foul was called after the buzzer. With no time left on the clock, the Bulldogs sank a pair of free throws to pull out the win.

It was the third game this year the Riders have lost (or were tied) at the buzzer and the third one-possession game they’ve lost this year.

Port Angeles (1-7, 6-9) beat Eisenhower High School 50-41 at Seattle Pacific University in a special Martin Luther King Jr. game. The Riders host Bainbridge at home at 7 p.m. today.

E. Jefferson 65, Vashon 46

CHIMACUM — The East Jefferson boys basketball team got huge games from John Mercado and Luke O’Hara, pulling away in the second half to beat Vashon 65-46 on Friday.

The Rivals outscored Vashon 39-22 in the second half. O’Hara scored 29 points to go with seven rebounds and Mercado had 27 points to go with six rebounds. Dillon Page-Castillo added eight rebounds.

East Jefferson (1-0, 5-7) hosted Cascade Christian on Saturday and then plays at powerhouse Annie Wright (3-0, 13-1) on Monday.

Neah Bay 75, N. Mason 47

Neah Bay 64, Crescent 42

NEAH BAY — The Neah Bay boys basketball team swept a pair of games this weekend, beating North Mason 75-47 on Saturday and Crescent 64-42 on Friday.

Daniel Cumming led the Red Devils with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Seactis Woodruff had 17 points and eight rebounds. Mathias Greene shot 3-for-7 on his 3-pointers for nine points, while Jodell Wimberly and LeAnthony Jimmicum also scored nine each.

The Red Devils also got a tough game from Crescent. Henry Bourm led the Loggers in scoring with 14, while Levi Bourm had 12.

For the Red Devils, Makyah Chambers led the team with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Seactis Woodruff had 11 points and Daniel Cummings nine points and seven rebounds.

Crescent (1-1, 7-7), goes to Chief Kitsap on Wednesday. Neah Bay (2-0, 10-3) played Chief Leschi on Monday.

Girls recap

Port Angeles 58, North Mason 33

BELFAIR — The Port Angeles girls basketball team got a measure of revenge against a North Mason squad that beat the Roughriders earlier this year with a 58-33 win. It was the fourth win in a row for the Riders.

Lindsay Smith had her second straight huge game with 24 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Lexie Smith had 12 points, 12 rebounds and seven steals, while Teanna Clark had seven points, six assists and four steals.

Port Angeles (5-2, 8-5) faces first-place Bainbridge (8-0, 10-4) on the road at 7 p.m. today.

E. Jefferson 56, Vashon 31

CHIMACUM — The East Jefferson girls got a huge first quarter from Penina Vailolo to help lead the Rivals to their seventh straight victory, 56-31 over Vashon.

Vailolo had 13 points in the first quarter as the Rivals took a 24-8 lead. She finished with 16 for the game. Dylin Shockley hit five 3-pointers and scored 15, while Kay Botkin scored nine and Kaydence Plotner scored eight.

East Jefferson (1-1, 8-6) looks to keep its winning streak going, hosting Klahowya (1-1, 3-8) at 7 p.m. today in Chimacum.

Forks 46, Chief Leschi 24

TACOMA — The Forks girls basketball team improved to 4-0 in Pacific 2B League action with a 46-24 victory over Chief Leschi.

The Spartans were led by Chloe Gaydeski with 15 points, while Bailey Johnson added 12 and Avery Dilley 11.

Forks (4-0, 7-8) next plays at Ilwaco (2-1, 5-4) at 6 p.m. today.

Neah Bay 55, N. Mason 40

NEAH BAY — The Neah Bay girls basketball team nailed seven 3-pointers in beating North Mason on Saturday 55-40.

Qwaapeys Greene led the team with 20, shooting 3-for-8 on her 3-pointers. Cerise Moss scored 17, shooting 4-for-9 on her 3-pointers. Angel Halttunen scored eight points and led the team with nine rebounds. Wiinuk Martin also scored eight.

With its win, No. 1-ranked Neah Bay improved to 12-0 on the season and has won 29 in a row dating back to last year.

Kingston 51, Sequim 46

KINGSTON —The Sequim girls basketball team hung tough with Kingston on Friday, but fell in a close one 51-46.

Hailey Wagner led the Wolves with 19 points and nine rebounds in her best game of the year. Libby Turella had nine points and four rebounds, while Taylor Heyting had six points and 13 rebounds. Gracie Chartraw had seven points and five steals.

Sequim (2-6, 3-9) next plays at North Mason (5-2, 8-4) at 7 p.m. today.
