POULSBO — The Sequim girls basketball team crushed usual league powerhouse North Kitsap 61-38 on the road, taking command of the game with a 17-6 third quarter.
Coach Linsay Rapelje said Hannah Bates had a good game with three 3-pointers and 15 points to lead the Wolves, who improved their record to 2-1. Both of their wins have been blowouts.
“We were a little off in the first half but pulled together and played well in the second half,” Rapelje said. “Hannah Bates was my player of the game not only shooting well but playing tough defense.
“My bench came in and worked really well together in a 2-3 zone with freshmen Taryn Johnson and Jolene Vaara attacking the hoop,” she said.
Jayla Julmist had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. She added seven assists and four steals. Jelissa Julmist had 13 points.
North Kitsap was led by Mia McNair with 20 points. McNair played for Chimacum a couple of seasons ago before transferring.
Sequim next plays at Kingston (3-1) on Wednesday. A home game tonight against Olympic was postponed.

NEAH BAY — The Red Devils picked up a nonleague win on less than 24 hours of rest after a win over Crescent on Friday.
“We had the kids come in at noon and stretch before we played at 4 p.m.,” coach Kane Bachelor said.
“We were able to get our young guys some playing time again, our eighth graders, and we got Cayden Smith on the scoreboard.”
Bachelor said Concordia Christian ran some interesting sets for his team to defend.
“They ran some post actions with screens including a curl, and they had good in-bounds plays, so we got some work defending some beautiful basketball.”
And unlike Friday’s game, when guards were the difference, Bachelor said the Red Devils’ interior players had good games.
“Our posts played pretty well, Devon Halttunen and Malcom Lovik, we started to connect with them inside.”
Neah Bay (2-0) hosts Chief Kitsap Academy on Friday.

Crescent 50, Shoreline Christian 37
JOYCE — Crescent picked up its first win of the year with a monster game from Brendan Bergstrom, who tallied 30 points and 13 rebounds.
The Loggers won 50-37 Saturday over Shoreline Christian.
“It’s funny how hitting shots can make all the difference in your defensive effort,” said coach Chris Ferrier. “We got out of the gate quick with confidence when we made our first couple shots. Bergstrom was hot right out of the gate and we really ramped up the defense the rest of the way.
“We got our hands on a lot of balls and had a lot of deflections and we were able to get running a little bit. Darren Lee was really great inside defensively and led us in assists. Brenten Dalton [14 points] found a groove both offensively and defensively,” Ferrier said.
Crescent (1-3) next plays at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday against Chief Kitsap.
