SILVERDALE — Sophomore Solomon Sheppard and senior sharpshooter Keenan Green led Sequim offensively in a 62-55 season-opening boys basketball win over Klahowya.
Sequim led 31-21 at halftime, but Klahowya inched closer in the third period and the Wolves’ lead was whittled to 48-43.
Sheppard knocked down three 3-point baskets in the fourth quarter, scoring nine of his game-high 21 points, as the Wolves held off the Eagles’ second-half comeback attempt.
Green hit four 3s on the night and hit for 20 points.
Lars Wiker and Charlie Grider each hit for six points for the Wolves (1-0).
“It was a good opening game for us,” coach Craig Brooks said. “Klahowya is a tough team that should do well this year. The boys played with a lot of energy. We made some first-game mistakes, and there is a lot to improve on. The important part is that everyone plays for each other and we did that very well.”
Sequim visits Fife in another nonleague contest at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Girls Basketball
Neah Bay 64, Montesano 33
MONTESANO — Angel Halttunen and Ryana Moss each totaled 14 points as the Red Devils opened their Class 1B state championship defense by blowing out the 1A Bulldogs on the road.
Cerise Moss added 13 points for Neah Bay (1-0). The Red Devils visit 2B Rainier on Tuesday.
Kingston 51, East Jefferson 45
PORT TOWNSEND — Rivals head coach Lorraine Rimson was encouraged by her team’s performance against the 2A Buccaneers in their season opener.
“We had two freshman starters and the kids blew me away. They were great,” Rimson said. “Kingston has a large team. They had to cut kids for the first time, so it was a great game for us with a small roster.
“We had some turnovers at the end of the game. I think the kids were exhausted, some unforced errors and couldn’t get it closer than four.”
Sophomore Penina Vailolo poured in 19 points and grabbed 18 rebounds for East Jefferson.
“She was disappointed she missed some shots, but she shot 53 percent from the floor,” Rimson said. “I’ll take that every day.”
Freshman Teri Wiley added 11 points and senior post Abbie Liske grabbed nine rebounds and scored four points. “Abbie had no turnovers and she had a couple of important steals for us,” Rimson said.
The Rivals also did a good job playing a new defense, Rimson said.
“Kingston has some really good 3-point shooters, so we put in a zone the day before at practice and they really were aggressive in it,” Rimson said. “They didn’t take any plays off.”
