PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Rivals girls win over Vashon

Forks girls lose, but still alive in playoffs

PORT TOWNSEND — Penny Vailolo had 17 points to lead the Rivals to a 44-36 senior night victory over Vashon.

“This was a great win for us on senior night,” coach Lorraine Rimson said. [Senior] Abbie Liske had been under the weather for a stretch, and was finally getting back up to being able to play sustained minutes. She was very solid for us. All of the girls played hard and well.”

Rimson said the team is adapting to Teri Wiley’s season-ending injury.

“It was a great team victory and an overall fun night. The girls are dialed in as we move toward districts and the first home playoff game in a good while.”

East Jefferson (10-4, 10-9) has secured at least the No. 4 seed to district play and will host a loser-out game on Feb. 12.

The Rivals wrap the regular season by hosting Annie Wright tonight.

MONTESANO — The Forks girls basketball team moved into the consolation bracket of the district 4 2B tournament with a 55-37 loss to Toutle Lake.

The Spartans had a rough third quarter and a rough scoring night from their star player Keira Johnson. They were outscored 18-6 in the third as Toutle Lake took control of the game.

“It was a pretty good game going into halftime. We felt good about where we were at,” said coach David Hurn. “We were pretty comfortable. Maybe too comfortable.”

Bailey Johnson led the Spartans with 16 while Chloe Gaydeski had 10. Keira Johnson scored four points, well below her average of 20-plus a game.

The Spartans (16-6) are still alive, but now must win three straight games to have a chance to qualify for the state 2B tournament. They play a familiar opponent, Ocosta at 7:30 p.m. today at Black Hills High School in Tumwater. The Spartans have beaten Ocosta twice this season 75-37 and 59-31.

Hurn said district 4 is probably the toughest tournament in the state with the No. 1 team in the state in RPI, Rainier, No. 2 Adna, No. 4 Napavine No. 7 Toutle Lake and No. 10 Forks all in the district.
