FORKS — Forks got back to business after a two-game losing skid last week, getting a career-high 29 points from junior big man Trey Baysinger to get past the Hoquiam Grizzlies 71-57 in an Evergreen League boys basketball victory Tuesday.
“We really challenged Trey and boy, did he answer,” Spartans coach Rick Gooding said. “That’s the type of player Trey can be for us.”
Tony Flores had 16 points and numerous assists.
“Tony controlled the game,” Gooding said. “He did a good job penetrating the zone and finding Trey inside.
“Somebody has to sacrifice when somebody scores 29. And you get there by making that extra pass or not forcing the shot because you know Trey has the hot hand.”
Skyler Steffen added a career-high 14 points for Forks.
“With Trey and Skyler we had the size advantage,” Gooding said. “[Hoquiam] started in man and we did well, then they switched to a 2-3 zone and that’s been an Achilles’ heel, but we really executed and got to 40 points at halftime.”
Gooding said a good practice Monday helped the team get back to playing up to potential.
“We had a good practice on the holiday and the kids came back energized,” Gooding said. “We had fun, we played hard and played our style.
“I’m proud of the way we responded and played at home. We learned from previous mistakes that we’ve made this season. That fourth quarter we outscored them 19-9 and we really responded after they outplayed us in the third.”
Forks (2-2, 11-5) visits Tenino (0-3, 4-9) tonight.

Girls Basketball
Forks 52, Hoquiam 29
FORKS — The Spartan girls picked up their first win in Evergreen 1A play and got in the mix for a postseason berth with a 52-29 shellacking of Hoquiam.
Forks had three girls in double figures in points and three girls in double figures in rebounds in Tuesday’s win. The Spartans put the game away with a 21-6 third quarter.
“When we’ve done better offensive, we’ve had balanced scoring,” said coach David Hurn.
Hurn said the Spartans didn’t shoot that well, but they had 31 offensive boards and outrebounded the Grizzlies 70-35.
The Spartans also used a huge 21-6 third quarter to pull away. Forks entered the half with a 27-15 lead with Hoquiam still hanging around.
“We extended that lead at halftime, it wasn’t enough,” Hurn said.
Chloe Leverington led Forks with 12 points, while Jayden Olson and Kadie Wood each scored 11. On the boards, Leverington had 14 rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds, while Rian Peters and Olson each had 10 rebounds.
The win puts Forks back in the mix for one of the top three slots in the Evergreen 1A League. The Spartans (1-3, 6-7) have a huge league game Thursday at third-place Tenino (1-1, 5-7), which beat Forks 45-27 earlier this season. Hurn said this is a must-win for the Spartans to get in third place.
“It’s a game we need to get. I was disappointed the last time we played them. I’m looking forward to going down there and flipping the script,” Hurn said.

South Whidbey 45, Chimacum 16
CHIMACUM — The Chimacum girls came out flat against South Whidbey and were never able to get in the scoring groove in a 45-16 loss.
“It’s the most anemic offensively I’ve ever seen. The most lethargic start of a game all year,” said coach Trevor Huntingford.
Huntingford said neither team was able to score until the final couple of minutes of the first quarter when the Falcons were able to string together eight points. They opened the lead up to 22-5 by halftime.
“In the second quarter, we got slower, not faster,” Huntingford said.
After halftime, Huntingford said the Cowboys’ play improved.
“I actually thought we worked a lot harder,” he said.
The Cowboys were led by Alyssa Vandenberg with eight points.
“That was her most aggressive offensive performance of the year,” Huntingford said. Katie Clark also scored five points despite being violently sick with the flu the day before the game.
Chimacum (0-3, 6-6) next plays at Concrete (0-3, 0-9) on Saturday.
