ABERDEEN — Forks made it two wins in two nights by toppling Class 2A Aberdeen 55-45 in a nonleague girls basketball game.
The Spartans (2-0) built up a 15-point lead and showed resolve when the Bobcats trimmed that advantage to two points in the final frame, according to coach David Hurn.
“We faced some adversity,” Hurn said of Wednesday’s game.
“Give Aberdeen credit, they didn’t quit and got the lead down to two in the fourth quarter.
“This is a game I feel we would have lost last year, but we called timeout and I saw confidence in their eyes. And we came out of the timeout with an 8-0 run and got the lead back to 10. To see them respond to that was encouraging. That growth is exciting and motivating.”
Forks exploited a height advantage in the post with 6-foot freshman post Chloe Leverington and 5-10 sophomore Rian Peters.
“We knew we had some mismatches down in the post,” Hurn said.
“Hopefully that would open up some open shots down low and we were able to get a couple 3s and build a lead going into halftime.”
Leverington poured in 16 points, including hitting 8 of 11 free throws, and grabbed 20 rebounds.
“She was more excited about hitting her free throws than scoring 16 and getting 20 rebounds,” Hurn said.
“She’s doing great, coming in full steam ahead, she’s played a lot of basketball in her day. She Has great attitude and I think she has a bright future ahead of her. The whole team is like that, this group is ready to work with you.”
Peters added 14 points, Kesia Rowley scored nine and Jayden Olson scored eight.
The Spartans host Klahowya tonight.

Boys Basketball Sequim 51, Port Townsend 41
SEQUIM — Payton Glasser scored 32 points and grabbed six rebounds as the Wolves rallied past the Redhawks in the season opener for both squads.
Sequim (1-0) trailed 29-22 at halftime but held Port Townsend to just 12 second-half points, including a 17-4 fourth quarter advantage to claim the lead and pull away in Wednesday’s game.
Nate Despain added nine points and Riley Cowan had six for the Wolves.
The Redhawks were led by senior Kaiden Parcher’s 24 points.
Jacob Boucher and Noa Apker-Montoya each tallied five points.
Sequim visits North Mason on Wednesday.

ABERDEEN — A rough third quarter sunk the Spartans in a nonleague road loss to the Bobcats on Wednesday.
Forks trailed 33-26 at halftime and was outscored 26-8 in the third quarter.
Austin Flores led the Spartans (1-1) in scoring with 17 points. Braton Armas added 12 and Cort Prose scored six.
Forks hosts Klahowya tonight.
