PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles High School dipped into the collegiate ranks to find the next leader of the Roughriders boys basketball program.
Kevin Ruble, previously an assistant with the NCAA Division I University of Portland women’s basketball program, has been selected to serve as head coach, the school announced Tuesday.
“I’m thrilled to have coach Ruble join our athletic program,” said Jarom Packer, assistant principal and athletic director at Port Angeles High School.
“The hiring committee unanimously agreed that he is the right person to lead our boys basketball program. He brings a wealth of basketball knowledge, a humble attitude and a clear vision for success,” Packer said. “Coach Ruble grew up in a small town in Iowa, so he understands first-hand what it means to be a student-athlete in a close-knit community. He has my utmost confidence, and I believe he will be a tremendous asset to our athletic department and the entire Port Angeles community.”
Ruble shared his excitement about joining the Roughriders.
“My family and I are super excited to begin this journey with the Port Angeles boys basketball program and the community,” Ruble said. “I’ve always cherished the opportunity to lead and mentor student athletes. My goal is to build and maintain a program that will succeed through hard work, selflessness and investing in one another. I just can’t express how excited I am to meet the boys and get started.”
Since 2019, Ruble has served as an assistant coach and video coordinator for the Portland Pilots, contributing to one of the most successful eras in program history.
Under head coach Mike Meek, the Pilots achieved a 95-38 record and secured two NCAA Tournament appearances out of the West Coast Conference in the post-COVID era.
“Kevin’s basketball knowledge, strong work ethic, ability to foster positive relationships and unwavering commitment to excellence have played a major role in the success of the teams he’s been part of,” Meek said.
Before his time at Portland, Ruble spent four years as an assistant coach at George Fox University and previously coached at two of the most prominent public schools in Oregon: Lake Oswego High School and Beaverton High School in Oregon, working with both boys and girls programs.
Beyond basketball, Ruble brings leadership and discipline from his 14 years of service in the U.S. Air Force. He holds a bachelor of arts in biology from Drake University, and his diverse life experiences have shaped a coaching philosophy rooted in teamwork, integrity and continuous growth.
Ruble is married to his wife Megan and the couple have five children.
Basketball practices begin Nov. 17.
Ruble takes over for Kasey Ulin, who resigned as the head coach earlier this month after leading the program for 11 years.
