PREP BASKETBALL RECAP: Sequim boys, Neah Bay girls remain perfect after weekend action

SEQUIM — The Sequim boys basketball team remained perfect this season, nearly doubling up Fife in a 75-40 win Friday.

The victory pushed the Wolves’ record to 8-0 ahead of a huge matchup tonight against Olympic Peninsula rival Port Angeles.

Sequim had a lot of balance with six players scoring at least six points. The Wolves were led by Jericho Julmist, who hit three 3-pointers and scored 20. Charlie Grider had his biggest game of the year with 17 points and Ethan Melnick hit three 3-pointers to score 13.

Forks 50, Ilwaco 33

ILWACO — The Forks boys basketball team overcame poor shooting and a slow start to pull away from Ilwaco 50-33 in a Pacific 2B League opener Friday.

Fortunately, the Spartans played great defense, allowing only 11 points in the first half, and got a fantastic game from Landen Olson.

Olson finished the game with 18 points and 15 rebounds, leading the Spartans in both categories.

Titus Rowley had 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Noah Foster scored eight. Brody Lausche had 10 rebounds.

Forks (1-0, 9-1) returns to league action against Raymond-South Bend (2-4) at 7 p.m. today.

Neah Bay 53, MVC 46

Neah Bay 63, LaConner 53

MOUNT VERNON — The Neah Bay boys basketball team got a huge weekend from Tyler Swan in a pair of wins over La Conner and Mount Vernon Christian at the Mount Vernon Christian Tournament.

The Red Devils (6-1) won 53-46 over Mount Vernon Christian on Saturday, as Swan had 24 points, eight rebounds and seven steals. LeAnthony Jimmicum scored 14.

Swan’s game Friday against LaConner was even better, as he had a rare 20-20 game with 21 points and 21 rebounds. He hit a pair of 3-pointers.

Jodell Wimberly scored 13 and Makyah Chambers 10.

East Jefferson 48, University Prep 41

SEATTLE — The East Jefferson boys basketball team beat University Prep 48-41 on Friday for its second win of the year.

Luke O’Hara led the Rivals with 21 points while Julius Mercado came up from the JV squad to score 10. John Richard Mercado had eight.

East Jefferson (2-5) next hosts Klahowya (2-8) in Port Townsend at 7 p.m. today.

Oakville 61, Crescent 46

OAKVILLE — The Crescent Loggers basketball team struggled with its outside shooting, going 3-for-25 from beyond the arc in a 61-46 loss to Oakville.

The Loggers (6-5) were led by Mikah Love with 13 points, Henry Bourm with 12 and Josh Noel with 11. They next play at Shoreline Christian on Friday.

East Jefferson 58, University Prep 44

SEATTLE — The East Jefferson girls basketball team got a monster game from Penina Vailolo in winning its second straight game Friday, 58-44 over University Prep.

Vailolo scored 26 points and pulled down 18 rebounds, 11 of them on the offensive boards. She shot 12-for-23 from the floor.

Vailolo scored 12 of her points in that third quarter and finished with 18 for the half.

Kaydence Plotner added 14 points and six rebounds, while Dylin Shockley had nine points and Kay Botkin seven points and five assists. Teri Wiley had five steals and four assists.

The Rivals (0-1, 3-6) return to Nisqually League action with a game in Silverdale against Klahowya (1-0, 3-4) at 7 p.m. today.

Neah Bay 51, MVC 36

Neah Bay 60, Forks 31

MOUNT VERNON — The two-time defending state champion Neah Bay girls basketball team remained undefeated with wins this weekend over Mount Vernon Christian and Forks at the Mount Vernon Christian Tournament.

The Red Devils beat MVC 51-36 on Saturday. The Hurricanes are a familiar foe that Neah Bay has repeatedly faced in the postseason in both district and state tournaments.

Qwaapeys Greene had a monster game, scoring 35 points on 11-for-19 shooting.

Against Forks on Friday, Neah Bay was led by Cerise Moss, who hit four 3-pointers and scored 20. Greene had 17 points, 10 rebounds and five steals, while Wiinuk Martin had six points and eight rebounds.

Forks was led by Fynlie Peters, who had seven points. Bailey Johnson scored six and Brooklynn Rondeau five.

Central Kitsap 54, Port Angeles 40

BREMERTON — The Port Angeles girls basketball team was hurt by a rough second and third quarters in a 54-40 road loss Friday against 3A Central Kitsap.

Central Kitsap outscored the Roughriders 40-14 in the second and third quarters.

The Riders were led by Lindsay Smith, who scored 19 points to go along with eight rebounds and three steals.

Teanna Clark scored nine points to go along with five steals and four assists.

Port Angeles (1-2, 4-5) returns to Olympic League play at home at 5:15 p.m. today with a game against Sequim (1-2, 2-5).

Cedar Park Christian 54, Forks 50

MOUNT VERNON — The Forks girls basketball team got a huge game from Bailey Johnson, but the Spartans were hurt by too many turnovers in a 54-50 loss against Cedar Park Christian (Bothell) in the finale of the Mount Vernon Christian Tournament.

Johnson scored 24 points to go with five assists and seven steals.

Chloe Gaydeski also scored 10.

Oakville 37, Crescent 31

OAKVILLE — Playing with just five girls, the Crescent Loggers nearly pulled out a win against Oakville, falling 37-31. Audrey Gales hit three 3-pointers and led the team with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Naomii Sprague had 14 points and seven steals.
