PORT TOWNSEND — Port Angeles wrapped up the first half of the Olympic League girls basketball slate with an undefeated record by beating Port Townsend 47-19.
The defending league-champion Roughriders (8-0 in league, 10-2 overall) hold a two-game lead over a triumvirate of second place teams, Sequim, Kingston and Olympic.
Maddy Hinrichs led Port Angeles in scoring with 16 points, including eight in the first quarter.
The Redskins played the Riders fairly tight in the first quarter behind three 3-pointers, but Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter said Port Townsend struggled to score against his team’s 2-3 zone thereafter.
Bailee Jones added 9 points for the Riders.
“Bailee Jones had a nice game inside for us offensively,” Poindexter said following Monday’s win.
Jewel Johnson scored eight points for Port Townsend, while Anne Meek and Trish Reeves contributed five apiece.
Port Angeles has a chance to add to its cushion at the top of the league standings tonight when it hosts Olympic (6-2, 8-4).
The Trojans have won seven straight league games since opening with losses to Riders and Sequim.
Olympic is coming off a win over North Kitsap on Monday.
Port Townsend (3-5, 6-6), meanwhile, hosts Sequim (6-2, 6-6) at 5:15 p.m. in the opener of a girls-and-boys doubleheader.

SEQUIM — The Wolves picked up another big Olympic League win over the Knights behind a monster game by senior Alexas Besand.
Besand, who has been hampered by injury in recent weeks, scored 18 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and had five steals and three assists.
McKenzie Bentz added 15 points and Caitlin Stofferahn scored 13 for the Wolves. Hailey Lester dished out six assists.
Sequim entered the fourth quarter trailing by 12, 36-34, before outscoring Bremerton 27-14 in the final period.
With the win, the Wolves (6-2, 6-6) kept pace with Olympic and Kingston in a tie for second place in the Olympic league.
Sequim plays at Port Townsend tonight at 5:15 p.m.
Bremerton was led by Sawyer Kluge’s 27 points.
The Knights (2-6, 3-7) lost their fifth straight and are currently in seventh place in the Olympic League.

NEAH BAY — The Red Devils pulled away from the Spartans in the fourth quarter on Monday.
Neah Bay led 34-33 after one quarter before outscoring Forks 17-7 over the final eight minutes.
Cierra Moss paced the Red Devils with 22 points, 13 rebounds and four steals.
Faye Chartraw added nine points, eight rebounds, six steals and three blocks, and Holly Greene contributed 10 points.
Forks was led the Spartans with 15 points.

QUILCENE — The Rangers lost another close 1B Sea-Tac League game to fall to 2-7 in league play.
Megan Weller led Quilcene with 14 rebounds and three assists, along with 13 points.
Allison Jones scored nine points and dished three assists; Bailey Kieffer had seven points; Taylor Burnston scored four points; and Sammy Rae had five boards and four points.

NEAH BAY — The Red Devils, ranked No. 4 in Class 1B, won this first home game of the season over the Spartans.
“Neah Bay is just too much. They have a perfect mixture of size and speed,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said after Monday’s game.
“I don’t know how they aren’t ranked No. 1 in 1B. They’re the type of team that can play at any level and be competitive.”
Josiah Greene led the Red Devils with 16 points, shooting 7 of 7 from the field. He also had two blocks.
Abraham Venske added 11 points, five rebounds and three assists, and Kenrick Doherty scored nine points and dished three dimes.
The Spartans were again without starting post Leo Gonzales, who has missed two straight games due to injury.
That left 5-foot-9 Dimitri Sampson to man the post for Forks.
“He hung in there and blocked out pretty well. That’s one of the things that kept us in the game in the first quarter,” Gooding said of Sampson.
“Hopefully we can start getting kids healthy instead of getting kids hurt.”
Sampson finished with four points.
Colton Raben led Forks with 12 points. Ish Greene contributed eight, Ollie Sampson added seven, Andrew Armas scored six and Parker Browning had five.
“A positive note is that for one of the first time all year we had balanced scoring,” Gooding said.

BREMERTON — The Knights pushed their Olympic League lead to two games by beating second-place Sequim at home.
Bremerton finishes its first run of the league schedule with a perfect 8-0 record (9-2 overall).
Sequim, meanwhile, remains in second place at 6-2 (8-4 overall).
Alex Barry led the Wolves with 14 points, 12 of which came from his four 3-pointers.
Anthony Pinza scored 13 points and dished out six assists, and Erik Christensen had nine points and pulled down eight rebounds, which tied him for the team lead with Rory Kallappa.
Sequim returns to action tonight in second game of a doubleheader at Port Townsend (2-6, 4-7). The boys game tips off at 7 p.m.
