PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls basketball team routed Klahowya 64-22 to set up an early season battle between undefeated Olympic League favorites.
The Roughriders (4-0, 5-1) travel to Poulsbo to face North Kitsap (3-0, 5-1) tonight.
Against Klahowya on Monday, Port Angeles pulled away in the second quarter and held the Eagles to four points after halftime.
“The game was close early as Klahowya hit some early 3-pointers, and we struggled to make shots inside,” Port Angeles coach Mike Poindexter said.
“We had a bit of a hard time adjusting to the long rebounds from Klahowya’s shot attempts, but in the second half, we did a better job rebounding on both defense and offense.
“Lenora Hofer led us in scoring partly due to her ability to complete offensive rebound put-backs.”
Hofer finished with 12 points. Three other Riders reached double figures, as Hayley Baxley, Krista Johnson and Maddy Hinrichs had 11 each.
Bailee Jones and Nizhoni Wheeler scores six apiece, Kylee Jeffers had five and Maddie Boe finished with two.
“Lenora and Hayley Baxley both turned in their best performances of the year, and we were able to get all our players significant minutes on the floor,” Poindexter said.
Hinrichs and Boe combined to slow down Klahowya’s leading scorer Izzy Severns, who was held to 11 points.
In tonight’s game with North Kitsap, the Riders will have to slow down the high-scoring trio of Rebekah Baugh, Kristin Brown and Molly Lemmon, who scored 19, 18 and 18 points, respectively, in the Vikings’ win over Bremerton on Monday.
Port Townsend 36, North Mason 31
PORT TOWNSEND — The Redskins notched their first Olympic League win of the year over the Bulldogs.
Port Townsend (1-3, 2-3) was led by Jewel Johnson with 16 points and Jayde Richardson with nine. Rilke Rutenbeck added four, Trish Reeves had three and Kassie Olin and Anne Meek each scored two.
The Redskins play at Klahowya (0-3, 2-4) tonight.
Kingston 47, Sequim 42
SEQUIM — Caitlin Stofferahn’s 15 points and Alexas Besand’s 11-point, 12-rebound effort weren’t enough to keep the Wolves among the ranks of those undefeated in Olympic League play.
Elise Beuke added seven points for Sequim, Kylee Williams had five, and Hailey Lester and Vanessa Martinez score two points each.
The Wolves (2-1, 2-3) play at winless North Mason (0-4, 0-6) tonight.
Mount Rainier Lutheran 51, Quilcene 28
TACOMA — The Rangers fell to defending 1B Sea-Tac League champion Mount Rainier Lutheran on Monday.
“The Hawks look to be the best team [we] have faced this season,” Quilcene coach Briana Weller said.
“This team was solid everywhere. They had great shooters and were quick. The Hawks showed great ball movement on offense and had a tenacious defense.”
The Rangers were again playing without point guard Megan Weller and forward Brooke Raynor, who missed their second straight game due to illness.
Sammy Rae had another big game in their absence, scoring 10 points and pulling down 16 rebounds.
Allison Jones added nine points for Quilcene, while Jerrica Viloria had five rebounds and three steals and Katlyn Hitt grabbed two boards and blocked two shots.
“I hope the [we] took notice of how solid the Hawks team unit played,” Briana Weller said.
“I would love for them to strive to become that sort of team in the near future.”

Port Angeles 84, Klahowya 62
SILVERDALE — Four Roughriders scored in double figures to lead Port Angeles to its fourth victory of the young season, surpassing the three wins it had in 2012-13.
Derek Schumacher led the Riders with 17 points, including 3 for 5 on 3-pointers, and Hunter Hathaway 16 points and 11 rebounds, eight of which came off the offensive glass.
Steven Lauderbeck added 10 points and eight rebounds, and Hayden Gunderson scored 14 points and had four steals. Logan Ciaciuch also had four steals and scored five points.
Brady Konopaski dished out nine assists for Port Angeles. He also made 6 of 6 free throws and pulled down four rebounds.
The Riders (3-1, 4-2) host North Kitsap (2-1, 3-2) tonight.
Kingston 62, Sequim 51
KINGSTON — The Wolves lost their first game of the season to the Buccaneers, who are off to a 3-1 start in Olympic League play.
Sequim (2-1, 3-1) led 29-24 at halftime, but were outscored 38-22 in the second half.
Alex Barry continued his strong start to the season with 17 points and 4 steals, both team-highs.
Anthony Pinza added 11 points and Erik Christensen scored nine, grabbed seven boards and blocked four shots.
Rory Kallappa was held to five points, but pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
Sequim hosts North Mason (0-4, 2-5) tonight.
