PREP BASKETBALL: Port Angeles boys get past Forks

FORKS — Port Angeles took an early lead and never let it go in its 56-43 win over Forks in nonleague boys basketball action.

Derek Schumacher led the Roughriders in their season-opener with 16 points and six steals, Hunter Hathaway had 12 points and Hayden Gunderson scored 10.

The Spartans fell to 0-2 as they struggled to solve Port Angeles’ press defense.

“They basically full-court trapped us the entire game,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said after Wednesday’s game.

“Our inexperienced kind of showed. We have a bunch of kids who haven’t seen a press in a long time.”

The Riders also had a size advantage, with Hathaway, Cameron Burns and Austin Polly each grabbing seven rebounds.

But Forks’ one post player, Leo Gonzales, still managed to have a monster game, even after sitting most of the first quarter with foul trouble.

Gonzales scored a game-high 20 points, and Gooding estimates he had 15 rebounds.

“He cleaned the glass for us,” Gooding said.

Colton Raben was the only other Spartan to score in double figures with 11 points.

Gooding also praised the effort of Jeffrey Schumack.

“Schumack, even though he didn’t score, came off the bench and was a real spark for us,” Gooding said.

Brady Konopaski led the Riders with five assists. He also scored seven points and had three steals.
