PREP BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS: Port Angeles, Sequim boys and girls to host four playoff games

PORT ANGELES — Postseason basketball is moving into high gear this week as the Port Angeles boys and girls basketball teams are all hosting bidistrict tournament games tonight and Wednesday.

Teams from East Jefferson, Forks, Crescent and Neah Bay are all also in the playoffs.

It starts tonight with the Port Angeles boys hosting Sammamish in the District 2/3 2A tournament with a chance to qualify for the state 2A tournament with a victory.

Both the Port Angeles boys and girls got good seeds.

The Roughriders, the second-place team in the Olympic League (11-3 league, 15-6 overall), are the No. 4 seed in the bidistrict tournament while Sammamish (15-7) is the No. 5 seed. Port Angeles’ Ratings Percentage Index is No. 10 in the state while Sammamish, the second-place team out of the KingCo League, is No. 20. Game time has been moved up to 5 p.m. today.

Even if Port Angeles loses, the Riders are still alive in the bidistrict tournament, but they would have to win two straight to qualify for state.

Port Angeles and Sammamish have a common opponent in Renton. Renton beat the Riders at home 76-64, while winning two out of three games against Sammamish.

Meanwhile, Sequim (5-9 league, 10-10 overall), a fairly low seed, gets a break by hosting a playoff game against Evergreen of Seattle (9-12). That game is at 6 p.m. The Sequim boys are a No. 11 tournament seed while Evergreen is seeded No. 14. This is a loser-out game. If the Wolves win, they move on to play another loser-out game on the road Thursday against the winner of Franklin Pierce and Renton.

2A girls

The Port Angeles girls basketball team (13-1, 15-6), the outright champion of the Olympic League are seeded No. 2 in the bidistrict tournament and just like the boys, they just need to win this game to make state. They face No. 7 seed Foster (15-6) at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Foster is the second-place team out of the KingCo League. Port Angeles’ RPI is No. 11 in the state while Foster is No. 24.

The Sequim girls will also host a bidistrict game at 6 p.m. Wednesday with a chance to qualify for state with one win. The Wolves (10-4, 12-5, No. 13 RPI) are seeded No. 4 and host Enumclaw (14-6, No. 18 RPI).

If the Port Angeles and Sequim girls lose, they are both still alive in the bidistrict tournament, but they would each have to win two games to qualify for state.

Forks

The Forks girls basketball team (17-6) plays fellow Pacific 2B League member Ilwaco (14-7) at Castle Rock High School in a loser-out District 4 2B tournament contest at 6 p.m. today. The Spartans have beaten Ilwaco twice this season. This is a loser-out game with Forks needing to win at least one more game to qualify for state.

The Forks boys basketball team (12-10) is also in a loser-out game, playing Chief Leschi at Castle Rock High School at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Chief Leschi (17-5) has beaten Forks twice this season and the Spartans are in the same position as the girls, needing to win at least one more game to make state.

East Jefferson

The East Jefferson boys (9-10) basketball team plays at Life Christian (11-9) in a District 3 1A tournament loser-out game at 6 p.m. today.

The East Jefferson girls (10-10) played Vashon (7-12) on Monday night after press deadline. If the Rivals win that game, they would play Bellevue Christian (20-1) at Foss High School at 7 p.m. Thursday. Win or lose that game, the Rivals remain alive to play Friday or Saturday with a chance to qualify for the state tournament.

Crescent, Neah Bay

The Neah Bay boys basketball team hosts Summit Classical (16-5) at 6:30 p.m. today in the tridistrict 1B tournament. Neah Bay, the No. 2 seed in the tri-district, will play Friday win or lose.

The Neah Bay girls (16-2), ranked No. 1 in the state and seeded No. 1 in the tridistrict tournament, host Grace Academy (11-8) at 5 p.m. tonight in the tridistrict tournament. Win or lose, the Red Devils play again Friday.

The Crescent boys (17-3) played Northwest Yeshiva in a loser-out game Monday. If the Loggers win, they would play again at 6 p.m. today at No. 1-ranked Lummi (19-1). Win or lose that game, Crescent plays again on Friday.
