PREP BASKETBALL: Freshmen Lausche and Micheau lift Forks in win over Hoquiam

Play big minutes in victory

FORKS — Forks received some strong performances from freshman players to knock off former Evergreen League foe Hoquiam 54-39 on Wednesday in a nonleague boys basketball game.

“It definitely had the feel of a winter-break game,” Spartans coach Rick Gooding said. “We didn’t play our best, but we won, which is nice.”

Freshman Brody Lausche had nine points while classmate Dylan Micheau added eight.

“Brody was huge for us,” Gooding said. “He had to play a ton of minutes because Riley [Pursley] was at three fouls and was playing with a twisted ankle.

“[Lausche] is a workhorse and one of the best kids you’ll ever talk to. He’s so quiet sometimes you don’t notice he’s there.”

Pursley led Forks with 14 points, 10 coming in the second half.

“We didn’t shoot the ball spectacularly by any means, but we got after it and attacked the rim against a variety of defenses,” Gooding said. “Hoquiam played man, full-court man and 1-3-1 zone, and I was glad to see some improvements. And it’s nice to have a week-off plus, since we don’t play until Jan. 5.

Forks (2-1, 3-4) is scheduled to face Northwest Christian on the road Jan. 5.

Forks 54, Hoquiam 39

Hoquiam 7 9 8 15 — 39

Forks 10 13 16 15 — 54

Forks (54): Pursley 14, Olson 10, Northcutt, Doyle 7, Micheau 8, Salazar 2, Rancourt 4, Lausche 9.
