ONALASKA — The Forks girls basketball team got rolling in the second quarter and got a huge game from Keira Johnson in a 53-43 win on the road Tuesday against Onalaska.
It was the fifth straight win for the Spartans.
The Spartans got off to a slow start and found themselves down 11-8 after the first quarter. But they went on an 11-0 run in the last couple minutes of the second quarter to open up a lead they never gave up.
“We finally started playing a bit of defense and getting some steals and fast breaks,” said coach David Hurn.
Johnson led the Spartans with 20 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and five steals. Bailey Johnson had 14 points, Chloe Gaydeski 11 and Avery Dilley eight.
After a 2-3 start to the season, Forks hasn’t lost since Dec. 6, and that was to defending state champion Neah Bay.
“We’re just quietly grinding away on the road,” Hurn said. “I was a little worried but wanted to see how we would respond after a long break.
“We’re still turning it over too much. But we can play defense when we want to play defense,” Hurn said.
The Spartans (3-0, 7-3) are playing at the Mount Vernon Christian holiday tournament today and Saturday. They will play Lummi today and their Saturday opponent is yet to be determined.
