JOYCE — Behind a 22-5 second quarter and a 31-point effort from Keira Johnson, the Forks girls basketball team opened its season with a 59-35 victory Monday over Crescent.
“We settled down a bit [in the second quarter],” said Forks coach David Hurn. “The first game of the year, there was a lot of adrenaline flowing.”
Finley Peters also scored 10 off the bench for the Spartans as repeat all-league performer Johnson got off to a hot start her senior season.
“She’s played a lot of basketball for us. She’s going to be big for us this year and really set the tone in this game,” Hurn said.
Crescent actually hung tough with Forks the rest of the game as the Spartans only outscored the Loggers 37-30 the rest of the game. The Loggers were led by Naomii Sprague with 14 points and Ciara Cargo’s eight.
Forks (1-0) played again Tuesday against Port Angeles after press deadline. The Spartans next play at Rainier on Saturday.
Crescent (0-1) next hosts Ocosta at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Boys basketball
Forks 83, Crescent 22
JOYCE — The Forks boys basketball team got off to a fast start with an 83-22 victory over Crescent on Monday.
The Loggers had a decent second quarter against the Spartans, but then Forks outscored Crescent 49-4 in the second half to put the game away.
“Tough first one for us. Forks is a really big and physical team for us to match up with, and we hung in for a while, but they came out in the second half and put their foot on the gas and didn’t let up,” said Crescent coach Chris Ferrier.
“My guys did what I asked of them, we just need to continue to work on little things and improving our ability to finish ballgames. It’s a whole new group after last year and we are still a ways off from playing at our peak. It’s a good group of guys, though, and I can’t fault their effort,” Ferrier said.
Henry Bourm led the Loggers with 10 points, while Dominique Sprague had seven.
Aidan Salazar led the Spartans with 21 points, shooting 4-for-8 from beyond the 3-point line. He also had seven steals.
Brody Lausche had 17 points, Isaac Gonzalez shot a perfect 7-for-7 from the field for 14 points and Landen Olson hit a pair of 3-pointers for 12. Olson added five steals. Titus Rowley led the team with eight rebounds to go with six points.
Crescent (0-1) next plays at Quilcene at 6:45 p.m. Friday. Forks (1-0) hosts the Port Angeles JV at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Girls bowling
Port Angeles 7, Bremerton 0
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls bowling team narrowly took game one to earn the first two points of its match against Bremerton and never looked back, beating the Knights 7-0 at Laurel Lanes.
The Roughriders pulled away with a season-high team Baker score of 171. Abby Robinson (185) and Paige Pangaro (138) led the team to a 4-1 record.
“Those two have been a big part of our success,” coach Becky Gundersen said about the senior captains. Robinson added a 146 for a 166.5 average and Pangaro a 129 for a 133.5 average.
Also back in the lineup for the Riders was sophomore Zoey Van Gordon, who bowled 142 and 150 for an average of 146 on the day.
“Zoey brings a lot of energy to each match. It was great having her back,” Gundersen said.
Sophie Constant (86-132), Xoey Penn (103-106) and Caidence Pozarzycki also contributed.
The Riders visit Klahowya today and travel to Bremerton for a rematch on Thursday.
