FORKS — Forks went up big early and held off a Crescent comeback in earning a 52-45 nonleague boys basketball win at home Thursday.
“We got down early, we were a step slow coming off the bus and Forks was able to build up a nice lead,” Loggers coach Chris Ferrier said. “After that, though, my guys showed tremendous heart and trust in what we do and kept chipping away at the lead.”
The Spartans led 20-8 after the first quarter, so Crescent played catch up for the next two-plus quarters.
“We finally pulled ahead at 42-41 with about four minutes to go but a couple of costly turnovers let the Spartans go back in front and Forks executed at the end of the game to secure the win,” Ferrier said.
“Conner Ferro-May led us with 13 and Lukas Love had 10. Forks’ defense really gave us trouble trying to get the ball where we wanted.”
Crescent (0-1, 10-5) hosts Neah Bay on Tuesday.
Sophomore Kyle Lohrengel led the Spartans with eight points, while Grady Earls and Landin Davis each tallied seven.
Forks (5-5, 7-9) hosts Ocosta (6-4, 10-8) on Thursday.

Girls Basketball Port Angeles 46, North Kitsap 34
POULSBO — Different defensive strategies paid off for the Roughriders in an Olympic League tussle with the Vikings.
“Our 1-3-1 zone was effective early, but North Kitsap got a lot of open looks in the second quarter, so we switched to a 2-3 zone in the second half,” coach Michael Poindexter said.
“We got 10 steals out of that, but we gave up a few easy looks inside, plus some offensive rebound put-backs. Overall, though, we were happy with holding the Vikings to 34 points.”
On the opposite end, North Kitsap’s in-your-face defense sent Port Angeles marching to the free-throw line.
“Offensively, we struggled with turnovers against NK’s aggressive defense,” Poindexter said. “However, that defensive aggression got them into foul trouble all game, sending us to the free-throw line 29 times.”
The Riders hit 14 of those freebies and also drained 6 of 12 3-point shots, while holding North Kitsap to just 3 of 22 shooting from outside.
Anna Petty led Port Angeles with 15 points, including hitting 3 of 4 3-pointers. She added four steals.
Lexie Smith had five points, six steals, three blocked shots and seven rebounds in the win.
Port Angeles (9-2, 9-7) hosts Neah Bay today.

FORKS — The Spartans got back in the win column with a nonleague home win over the Loggers.
“I think what we wanted to do is see the ball go in the hole,” Forks coach David Hurn said. “It’s been a struggle to knock down shots in our last couple of games.”
Kadie Wood drained four 3-point baskets and led Forks with 16 points, while Kyra Neel added 15 and Keira Johnson 14 in the victory.
The Spartans switched up their defensive look this week as well.
“We changed it up this week, had a look in the mirror moment, we’ve played a 1-3-1 zone since I’ve been around here, so this week we switched it up to full court man-to-man. I thought we had been a little complacent in our zone and this will make us keep working at it.”
Forks (8-2, 12-5) visits Onalaska today in a nonleague matchup.
Crescent (5-7) visits Northwest Christian today.
