OCEAN SHORES — Forks senior Trey Baysinger scored 19 of his 33 points in a 33-point third quarter as the Spartans rolled past North Beach 64-49 in their Pacific League 2B boys basketball season opener.
“Our boys, Tony [Flores] was playing in the soccer district championship and Riley [Pursley], Ray [Davis], Trey, Logan [Olson] were all playing in the baseball district championship [on Saturday], so we weren’t thinking we would be ready to roar,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said.
“The kids who weren’t playing baseball or soccer practiced last week, and we had the gym open in the morning to get some shots up, but we didn’t have a full practice until Sunday.”
Gooding said Forks started strong, going up by eight points, but three 3-pointers by the Hyaks gave North Beach a 23-22 advantage at halftime.
But Baysinger got it going in a major way after the break with help from some unselfish teammates as the Spartans rolled to a 55-35 lead after three quarters.
Baysinger was being guarded by 6-foot-8 North Beach junior Tre’Vaughn Green the whole game.
“They played man the entire time, and Trey stretched him out from outside and also had some nice drop steps and got around him down low,” Gooding said. Green also was held to just six points against the Spartans 2-3 zone.
“We got the rust out after halftime,” Gooding said. “We came out and responded how we wanted to and let our defense lead to offense. We were being unselfish, and Tony had the ball in his hands every time down court. We haven’t played in a while so it was nice to have a sure-handed point guard leading us.”
With a senior-dominated team, Gooding expects Forks to be a major factor in the Pacific League title chase with Raymond a likely rival for the top spot.
