PORT TOWNSEND — The wins haven’t come this year for a very young East Jefferson girls team, but coach Lorraine Rimson is seeing the team progress.
“We’re seeing the improvement. We aren’t seeing it wins and losses,” said Rimson, whose team lost 43-21 Monday night to Life Christian in their home finale. “It’s been a tough year because of the lack of wins.
“We are building a foundation,” Rimson said.
The Rivals this year start just one senior and one junior and thus bring back most of the team next year. The team will also have brand new Rivals uniforms. Rimson is frustrated that it took two years to get funding for new uniforms for the joint Port Townsend-Chimacum program. She said a Chimacum booster club, Big Blue, has been great for the team getting them practice gear.
“Next year, we should look pretty slick,” she said.
East Jefferson (2-10, 2-11) wraps up its season at Klahowya on Thursday.
Sequim 38, North Kitsap 37
POULSBO — Still playing without Jelissa Julmist, the Sequim girls basketball team toughed out a very low-scoring 38-37 road win over North Kitsap to win a share of the Olympic 2A League championship.
“We didn’t shoot the ball well tonight and our defense was not what we are used to, but [we] fought all night,” said coach Joclin Julmist.
Jolene Vaara led the way, scoring half of the Wolves’ points. She finished with 19 points, 15 rebounds and four steals. Addie Smith made a pair of 3-pointers for six points.
“Hannah Bates was a good floor general. She did a good job handling the pressure and getting the players in a position to score,” Julmist said. “Hannah Wagner played good defense all night and battled on the boards and came up with some timely plays.”
“Tough win. Happy for the girls,” Julmist said.
Sequim (13-1, 16-3) wrapped up its regular season hosting Kingston on Tuesday night after press deadline, though that is a nonleague game (The Wolves have already played Kingston twice and this is a game added to fill out the schedule for both schools.).
Port Angeles (11-1) played Tuesday night at Bremerton and must play a tough North Kitsap team (9-3) in Poulsbo on Thursday night. If the Roughriders win both of those games, they will be Olympic 2A League co-champions with Sequim.
Boys basketball Sequim 65, Klahowya 60
SEQUIM — The Sequim boys on senior night came from way down to fend off Klahowya 65-60 on Monday night.
Sequim went into the second half down 32-24, but outscored Klahowya 41-28 in the second half. The Wolves had four players in double figures. Isaiah Moore had 15 points, while Cole Smithson had 14, Tyler Mooney 12 and Jaydin Possin 11.
“It was good to get an exciting win for our seniors on senior night,” said coach Greg Glasser. The Wolves’ seniors are Mooney, Possin, Duke Anderson, Adrian Brown, Kristian Mingoy and Pryce Glasser.
Sequim (4-9, 6-12) wrapped up its regular season Tuesday night at Olympic (2-10, 5-11). With a win, the Wolves could finish fifth in the Olympic 2A League and have a shot at making the bi-district playoff tournament.
