CLALLAM BAY — Clallam Bay’s boys basketball team shook off early pressure from Crescent to claim a 58-44 win.
Things looked promising for the Bruins (2-1, 8-6) early on after jumping out to a 10-0 start on the Loggers in Wednesday’s game.
“We stressed defense really, and we jumped out on them,” Clallam Bay coach Kelly Gregory said.
“Then they put a press on us and boom, they had cut the gap.
“We had guys that weren’t staying in their spots, and we were having trouble with it.”
The Bruins settled down and refocused, eventually pulling away from Crescent.
“Other than that one little jolt we were pretty solid,” Gregory said.
Gregory’s son, Kelly Gregory, had a double-double, leading all scorers with 20 points and hauling down 13 rebounds.
Sam Signor also posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, along with four assists and two steals.
Kyle Keys had 7 boards and six assists, including some “beautiful passes,” according to Gregory.
“He got to the paint and dished off real well,” Gregory said.
“Having Clayton Willis share the ball-handling duties really helped him out.”
Willis, an eighth-grader playing up on the varsity, added nine points.
“He’ll be the point guard of the future,” Gregory said of Willis.
Three other eighth-graders saw the court for Clallam Bay, Ryan McCoy, Caiton Smith and Jamari Signor.
“All the eighth graders got to get in there in the last quarter,” Gregory said.
“Everybody had a lot of fun in this one.
“We should have a good stretch here pretty soon, if we can get some solid numbers [turnout] the next few years.”
The Bruins have some time off before running a gauntlet of four games in six days next week.
Clallam Bay visits Forks on Monday and Crescent on Wednesday, before hosting Neah Bay and Taholah next Friday and Saturday.

CLALLAM BAY — A well-balanced offense and a high-pressure defense lifted the Bruins over the Loggers.
“This was a team effort on our part,” Clallam Bay coach Kathleen Winter said.
“We had eight girls all have a solid game for us and that is what I would expect from this years team.”
Molly McCoy led the Bruins with 12 points, Mariah LaChester added nine, and Inga Erickson put in seven points.
“Our press really took Crescent out of their game, and our defensive rebounding limited them to very few putbacks on the offensive end,” Winter said.
Lauren Hartley led the Loggers with 15 points.
