QUILCENE — Clallam Bay jumped out to an early lead and held off Quilcene 47-37 in a nonleague boys basketball contest.
“The boys have won two in a row and are starting to come together more and are playing as a team,” Bruins head coach Kelly Gregory said.
Clallam Bay’s Ryan McCoy led the way with 17 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.
“Quilcene was getting physical and our guys were whining they were getting grabbed,” Gregory said.
“McCoy had to sit out about a quarter of the game with foul trouble. He also got knocked out of the game a couple of times for blood [on his uniform].
“We had to go to zone [defense] late in the third to protect Ryan. We told him to keep his hands down by the side and we held them off.”
Caiton Smith added 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals for the Bruins (1-0, 3-4).
Ryan Bykerk added six points, four rebounds and three assists and Colin Aldana had four points and four assists for Clallam Bay.
Quilcene’s Chase Newman and Robert Comstock III each scored 12 for the Rangers (1-4, 2-7).
Clallam Bay also opened North Olympic League play with a 56-38 win over Chief Kitsap last weekend.
McCoy had 18 points to lead the Bruins.
“He’s a beast,” Gregory said. “He’s getting close to his 1,000-point [career scoring] ball.
Smith scored 17, including three 3-pointers, and Ryan Strid scored 12 for Clallam Bay.
“That one was probably their best game of the year,” Gregory said.
The Bruins host Neah Bay tonight.
Quilcene hosts Puget Sound Adventist on Thursday.
In the girls game, Clallam Bay (1-0, 5-3) doubled up Quilcene (3-2, 5-5) 60-30.
The Bruins were led by Cedar Johnson with 26 points. Miriam Wonderly scored 14 and Hannah Olson 13.
For Quilcene, the Rangers were led by Madison Coffey with 13 and Marissa Kieffer with seven.
Clallam Bay will next play at Neah Bay (1-0, 8-1) tonight.
Quilcene will host Puget Sound Adventist at 6 p.m. Thursday.
